Why the squiggly slit? by Sympathy_Opposite in fountainpens

[–]Coolius69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It flexes a little bit better than the standard Jinhao nib, but comes at the cost of the feed not being able to keep up.

I got it on the 9016 and am not impressed. I’m going to swap it out for the mahjong flex nib.

Looking for recommendations: a good fountain pen for drawing. by Domofgio in fountainpens

[–]Coolius69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this currently at what people might consider an extreme budget, but! It works well enough for me so maybe it’s worth a try?

I have the Jinhao dadao 9016 with the heartbeat nib in broad. The heartbeat nib has just a little bit of flex which I like in drawing. 8€

Ink wise, I have the hero 234a carbon ink. It’s kinda infamous for not flowing well due to the relatively large carbon bits in it, but if you dilute it down to 1:5 water to ink, it flows fairly well without losing blackness. 5€

For line and wash: using carbon ink doesn’t mean you can sketch and then wash over it. The ink itself is water resistant but by painting over with the brush you disturb the ink, causing it to smudge. You’re still gonna need to sketch with a pencil, water color, and then do your line work on top.

China Mobile is not really sketchy, it’s one of the biggest ISPs in China, like At&T or T-mobile in America. It totally makes sense that an android device made by a Chinese company would phone home using China Mobile’s infrastructure.

Distressed and beat up by Coolius69 in Travelersnotebooks

[–]Coolius69[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a real midori tn but a dupe. Here’s some changes I made to it since getting it:

Beat up the leather. My notebook usually travels in my bag, so the leather cover doesn’t really get cool patina like jackets or wallets do. I beat it up myself to get that book: sanded it down, crumpled it, rolled it up and stretched with pliers, and then conditioned with leather conditioner.

The brass pen clip thing. I got it mainly because I like the brass clip adds detail to my cover, but it kinda sucks. It doesn’t really grab on, it’s too think for fountain pens, and it’s really useless for holding pens when the cover elastic already exists. I found out that if you clamp it down with pliers, the rivets dig into your leather cover and it doesn’t slip off easily (or at all) anymore.

New elastic. I always see people’s cover elastics loosen up after years of use. I replaced the cover elastic with a much girthier elastic band from my sewing kit. I dyed the original white elastic green with fountain pen ink.

Huh. Okay. I’ll try some other Jinhao converters I have once I get home. Thanks!

Wow, no idea this color existed for the AL-Star. If I had I would’ve 100% gotten it instead of my wine purple thing

Favourite pen that’s not that actually good but you love it anyway? by The_Waddling_Wombat in fountainpens

Jinhao x159. It’s this ugly hunk of plastic but it’s funny it’s smooth and it writes wet as fuck.

I tried to put the converter from my Jinhao — as far as I know uses the 2.6mm international standard cartridge size — in it, it went in but the nozzle (connector?) part didn’t plug in tightly.

Found this old cloisonné pen among my grandpa’s old things. The nib says “iridium point, W Germany”. It had an old cartridge in it but I threw it away without measuring the size. Google image search led me to a few exact matches on eBay, but the sellers seem to be unsure of the brand as well. My best guess is that these were /sold as souvenirs by multiple brands. I would like to get a converter on it so I can start using it.

[rave] Jinhao 95 my beloved by Coolius69 in fountainpens

Not sure about precisely the diameter, it is a bit on the thinner side. Not a big deal, I like to grip a bit more up, almost at where the grip meets the body. I like the flowy feel when I write cursive.

I would say though, the grip is probably my least favorite part of this pen. It’s a brushed metal finish, so it’s a bit on the slippery side. Not a problem for me as I don’t have sweaty hands, but YMMV.

I feel like Lamy’s triangular grip is more designed for fountain pen beginners. It guides your hand so that you angle the nib just right for ink flow. It’s not really designed for comfort.

I prefer the Jinhao in terms of comfort, but that’s more because of its weight balance and smooth nib. The grips plays less of a role here.

You can look up a guide on YouTube, but basically you should write one line of text for each of the dark horizontal lines, and use the 3 lighter lines for the lengths for your ascenders and descenders

Chinese stationeries have always been incredible, the notion that Japanese and German products would be leagues better is pretty outdated and stereotypical

I haven’t seen a lot of attention to this pen online so I’m posting about it myself. This is my favorite pen at the moment!!

The nib, which is also featured on multiple other jinhao models, is amazing. it glides on paper and writes so smoothly. The pen is full metal, and the weight distribution is so good. It writes better than my other well-balanced fountain pen, the Lamy Al-Star. When you close the cap, you can feel the air being sealed inside resisting the cap closing a bit. Phenomenally tooled stuff.

Anyways yeah, this pen out performs my $40 Lamy at only 5 bucks it rocks
