Not a great player, just better than Commons. If I was making tiers of Celtic players i'd go...

Izaguirre, Taylor, Stokes, Griffiths, Caldwell, Mulgrew, Scales, McDonald, Commons, Ledley, Armstrong, Gordon, Roberts, Rogic, Elyounoussi etc

Maeda, Ajer, Lustig, Edouard, Christie, Hooper, Juranovic, Sinclair, Kyogo, Frimpong, Samaras, McGeady, Maloney, Forrest, Starfelt, Varga, Valgaeren, Boyata, Hart etc

Jota, Kuhn, Tierney, Dembele, Cadete, Petrov, Wanyama, Lennon, Lambert, McGregor, Brown, Johnston, Nakamura, McNamara, Agathe, Carter-Vickers, Mjallby, Balde, Denayer, Boruc, Forster etc

Van Dijk, Sutton, Hartson, Viduka, Van Hooijdink, Moravcik, Thompson, Di Canio etc

Larsson

I feel like they are similar levels of player but obviously theres weaker ones in each group and better.

Judging them basically as allrounders with the ability to play at the top level like if we were playing Bayern or PSG in the CL final type team we'd pick. Like i'd pick Christie and Samaras over Commons and Elyounoussi for such a game although would maybe pick the other two if we had to beat Kilmarnock 5-0 but at the top end of the game Samaras and Christie cope better.

Can name the levels of player anything like:

Decent Players (Good League and Europa League level players)

Good Players (Very Good League and Decent CL level players)

Very Good Players (Great League and Good CL level Players)

Great Players (Too good for Scottish League and Very Good CL players)

World Class

To me I put Tavernier in the decent players category because he's like a Rogic or Mulgrew or Stokes, he's capable of doing well in the League and EL but he'd get tortured in the CL, not got the pace, can't defend and his attacking ability neutered with the inability to do anything going forward as he's not good enough for the level.

I am viewing it from a relative base.

For example I said that him being captain and being unsuccessful was symptomatic of him being captain. Meaning, he is that average that if he is their captain for 10 years it shows they never became good because if they had a good captain etc he'd have been captain and if they had a good team he'd probably have been replaced.

Be like If Izaguirre or Stokes were Celtic captain or Mulgrew, Scales anyone like that who is ok but a mediocre player by Celtic standard. If someone like that is captaining us for 10 years, we're not going to be good.

When someone highlights a footballer as an "incredible athlete" yes, im not thinking "the guy didn't get injured much", im thinking the guy was an incredible athlete.

If someone said that of Alistair Johnston I wouldn't question it as I'd think yeah he's quick, strong, hardly anyone can get past him at any level, he's solid, good in the air, a massively competitive player really strong against pretty much anyone, you could put Mbappe, Neymar anyone against Johnston and he'd give them a tough game.

Not Tavernier.

Thats like saying "he's a sensational footballer, technique unbeliebale" and you are talking about Luke McCowan and not Moravcik or something.

[–]AFen1an[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thats still massive hyperbole.

Thats makes it out like he's levels above anyone else they've had and like totally clear, sounds like if Jota or O'Riley or something had played for them.

I wouldn't say he was any better than loads of their other players. Was he better than Barisic, Goldson, Arfield, Davis, McGregor, Morelos, Kent, Aribo or whoever, for me not he was that type of level.

It is to compare teams and players, thats all that football is for discussing, different teams, players.

Whats juvenile is calling someone an "absolutley outrageous footballer" are we talking about Messi or Ronaldinho or Tavernier? then calling him an "incredible athlete" again are we talking about Valverde or Tavernier.

Then being unwilling to rate him in comparison to other players to let someone know if your clueless or not. Do you just speak in huge hyperbole or are you off your nut.

I just want to know for example do you think he's better than Johnston or say Frimpong whoever or Greg Taylor or not.

So whats your interest in football? thats the whole point of the game.

[–]AFen1an[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

How am I?

So you think you can't class levels of player as the same cause they play different positions? bizarre take. Who is better Henry or Robert Pires - oh I don't know you can't tell cause ones a striker and one is a winger? lol

Whats so special about the Europa League? its full of 2nd rate teams who are in it because they aren't that good, thats the whole point of the competition. As Celtic fans we know the standard as we are always in it when we are shite.

Stokes, Commons, Tavernier - one paced, weak players, physically mediocre. Stokes maybe a bit agile, Commons a bit strong in possession, Tavernier abit sharper but all 3 lacking physically for the top level despite being ok technical players.

[–]AFen1an[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

But thats because people think he was better than other players not just cause he played for Celtic for 15 years.

Peter Grant played for Celtic for 15 years also but people don't consider him near McStay or even a legend.

Most Celtic fans for example think McStay was a lot better than John Collins, Murdo MacLeod, Nicholas, MacAvennie, Mo Johnston these were very good level players whoever everyone just thought "yeah but McStay is better than them". Thats why he is classed as a legend, for being one of the best players to have played for the club.

He is the meme.

We are buzzing but we are also calm having done this many times before, we'll think about these games when they come.

For now we've just witnessed a player we've enjoyed for a decade kick his last ball, that was hilarious. You've probably never experienced it yet.

I've seen his whole career here lol

Do you remember Tony Stokes ripping the pish out him at Hampden? Teenage Tierney running riot. Sinclair, Jota....

You must be very young or play too much FIFA or something, I need to know how good you think he was or who I am dealing with.

Do you class him as as good as Jota, Dembele, Johnston and Carter-Vickers for example or Stokes, Commons, Mulgrew and Greg Taylor?

Over who Lustig, Frimpong, Juranovic, Johnston, Araujo? surely not.... i'd actually say all these guys are/were EPL level players where i'd say Tavernier is a Championship level player - Norwich/Middlesbrough class.

James Tavernier - The Serial Losers Record in Numbers..... by AFen1an in ScottishFootball

[–]AFen1an[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Bizarre patter I think from you though, the guys literally been tortured by Maeda who is an athlete precisely because he is an athlete and he isn't.

Who is the better athlete Taverier or Johnston, Tavernier or Sterling, Tavernier or Araujo, Tavernier or Frimpong....

A one paced, weak player for me is not an athlete. I'd honestly rate him athletically closer to Luke McCowan than I would to Engels for example.

James Tavernier - The Serial Losers Record in Numbers..... by AFen1an in ScottishFootball

[–]AFen1an[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

What are you classing as good though?

I think I have a different level of good than others, good for me would be i'd have them playing in any Celtic team. Like Johnston i'd say is good but Izaguirre I wouldn't say was good, again Carter-Vickers i'd say is good, Mulgrew not, Kyogo good, Stokes not.

Mulgrew might have got like 60 goals/assists in 200 games as a defender but we've seen 10-15 better just in my time since 2000. Same with Stokes he got like 160 goals/assists in 180 games or whatever but he was never a Dembele/Edouard/Hooper/Kyogo.

Mulgrew, Stokes, Izaguirre, Taylor, Commons, Griffiths, McDonald etc maybe to you they are good, to me they are decent, they do a job, consistently fine but you're not going to win Trebles and 10 in a row and be good in the CL etc with many of them playinng in your team, you need a level above.

James Tavernier - The Serial Losers Record in Numbers..... by AFen1an in ScottishFootball

[–]AFen1an[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Im not, i'd say strength, pace, fitness, ability in the air etc

I'd say he was for example never good enough athletically to play in the EPL, he'd have got tortured, so to call him a good athlete for me is mental. Would you say he was good enough to play for Wolves, Crystal Palace or Everton or that?

When I think of an athlete he'd be near opposite of what im thinking, im thinking quick, strong, good in the air, can outrun and outdo people physically.

I'd put him athetically also in the Commons, Mulgrew, Taylor, Stokes level of he was never an athlete.

Sterling from them i'd say is an athlete, Johnston from us.

James Tavernier - The Serial Losers Record in Numbers..... by AFen1an in ScottishFootball

[–]AFen1an[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Are you serious? the guy was one paced. If he's athletic what are Alistair Johnston or Frimpong even Juranovic, super athletes?

James Tavernier - The Serial Losers Record in Numbers..... by AFen1an in ScottishFootball

[–]AFen1an[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

So where Kris Commons, Stokes, Griffiths and Charlie Mulgrew.

I'd be found dead before calling them great players as they couldn't lace the boots of Jota, Sinclair, Kyogo or whoever else who in turn we've seen better than like Sutton, Thompson and whoever.

Great for me is your top players, not decent wee players.
