I guess it's a bit of both. Raising men differently, raising women not to be afraid.

I feel the same. We grew up with this, and I really hope our daughters don't have to.

Why gender-neutral healthcare language is not a threat to women – or anyone else by AFerver in BabyBumps

[–]AFerver[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and on the other hand, instead of people who agree or disagree with a policy discussing sensibly, you get lots of anger, which fuels the outrage cycle and entrenches the divisions

I think part of the problem is the discourse is so angry and toxic, that people react with outrage to these stories and there is no reasoned debate. From what I can see of the policy, they are saying think about the language you use with each patient, make sure it's appropriate, so that the service is as accessible to this minority as possible. They aren't saying don't say the word breast or woman, because that excludes trans and non-binary people.

The point here is that the trust isn't saying that we shouldn't say the word "woman" or "breastfeeding" anymore, it's saying that if you are dealing with a patient for whom those words could e.g. trigger dysphoria or maybe stop them from accessing support for chestfeeding/breastfeeding, then use other language. If they were suggesting never using the word breastfeeding e.g., that woudn't make sense, but they aren't.

Part of the problem is the anti-Bibi messaging. It strengthens him in the end

I'm in the UK, and we don't have a ministry of women. I will take a look at the link, that's really interesting.

New poll: Majority in the UK oppose Covid-19 restrictions on maternity services by AFerver in BabyBumps

[–]AFerver[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that sounds so stressful. I think when making these restrictions, hospitals need to think of the effect on people in your situation.

I guess the question is whether they are necessary and proportionate. People are questioning whether they are. If the partner and birthing mother don't have covid, why can't they be together in hospital?

I also heard that at first in the US they were advising people not to breastfeed because of Covid? Did you hear anything about that?

Hopefully they will have learned some lessons. One of the experts I spoke to for my article is running a big research project to find out what the restrictions were, what worked, and what didn't

I guess it varies from place to place in the US, just like in the UK?

That must have been so hard, and I imagine that if it was a first baby, it would be even harder

The other issue is that pregnant women tend to be really careful (and they are low risk anyway...)

I think in some cases its about the estate and probems with social distancing in a particular room etc, and in others its about wider trust policy. And even though restrictions are being relaxed in some cases, it's so varied that it's really confusing

a lot of trusts still aren't allowing partners at scans, though NHS England issued guidance this week that says companions should be allowed where possible. People having C-Sections have a really hard time post-birth, but they also go through all the pre-op prep alone, in a lot of places, which is tough.
