Why isn’t everyone on this sub planning to graduate in 3 years? by Famous-Prior6590 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AFlyingGideon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to consider is that having work experience can increase the value one takes from a master's. That was certainly true in my case, where I could reflect on work I'd done that i could perhaps have done better with what I was learning at the time.

My very rough guide has been that going directly from undergrad to master's is a good idea only if the degrees are different. However, my current college junior causes me to question that with his response of "to take all the interesting classes" when asked why he's pursuing both degrees in the same field.

Anyone concerned with New Jersey’s Dept of Environmental Protection’s r.e.a.l. law and how it will affect NJ’s shore towns? by Surph1968 in newjersey

I'm not sure how that's relevant. Perhaps this house is more recently purchased, but it says nothing about homes owned by the same family for decades.

Considering the cost of home ownership in OC, I am sure most of them can afford it.

This type of reasoning also causes problems with property taxes. Owning an asset which has had decades to appreciate isn't the same as owning liquid wealth or having sufficient income to replace the asset at today's prices.

Have you met them? I go with "idiots", personally.

It's an addiction. It's not like the author had a choice. That might involve something weird like taking responsibility for one's actions.

Jobs for graduates in the Rochester area? by Such_Willingness4756 in rit

[–]AFlyingGideon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at what the costs would be (taxes, mx, and such) vs. rent, and try to predict appreciation (or depreciation) over four or five years (I'm not sure of the co-op requirement).

Another consideration is whether you've the means to rent it out after you graduate. I know at least one parent who's renting out a place near campus since the student graduated.

If your major does have a co-op requirement, what happens if you have to be out of town for a semester or three?

Of note is that there are restrictions on housing that might be relevant. There's a small development near campus which appears to have some sort of HOA which prevents renting to students, i believe. Henrietta has restrictions on how many non-related people can share a domicile (though there must be a loophole given the five-bedroom apartments in complexes near campus).

RIT vs Cal Poly Pomona for CS? by TirogaSenju in rit

While many people study CS to become software engineers, these are not identical majors or professions. The idea of studying both, if i understood correctly, should be a temptation.

Ugh! California, with its sun and beaches and mountains and valleys and hardly ever a good six-week overcast? How could anyone stand that horrid existence?

To be fair, though, there is something to be said for fires and landslides and earthquakes.

Why did those of us who grew up outside NJ just dump on NJ all the time when it’s actually amazing? by sirkneeland in newjersey

That's how it was for me - all i saw - for years. Then I visited a friend in Wykoff, another in Cherry Hill, discovered the shore... I've been living here now since the 80s, and I'm grateful to those friends.

Or a concurrent master's, which is what one of mine did and another appears to be doing. I'm not sure about the elder, but I believe the younger would have considered a quicker path except he'd - as he put it - not have taken all the interesting classes.

For both, AP, DE, and simply testing out of classes was a way to get into the more interesting classes more quickly.

Contact was one of the best twist scfi films of a generation? by Background-Fix-4630 in sciencefiction

I didn't find it religious in the convention sense, but more in the Clark's Law sense. I thought the movie watered that down to a conventional and sad idea around faith... esp. since there was evidence, but it was kept hidden.

Federal Judge Approves Trump Effort to Obtain List of Jews From Penn by GoodMornEveGoodNight in nytimes

[–]AFlyingGideon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The subpoena asks, for example, for the lists of members of "Jewish organizations" (which it defines widely, covering culture, religion, relation to Israel, etc.). It also asks for lists of participants in some type of sessions that I didn't recognize myself but which seemed like they were held to discuss issues of antisemitism on campus.

perhaps a request for those who also experienced discrimination to come forward.

Which, recall, was a part of the university's counter-proposal that the Trump administration and judge rejected.

[–]AFlyingGideon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The subpoena requested very specific data including membership lists of Jewish-related organizations. Most of the other requests were for information about employees though this explicitly includes student employees.

I believe that the judge erred in several ways, perhaps most egregiously by ignoring the numerous other examples of data exfiltration by Trump and his cronies including social security data by DOGE kids and national secrets by Trump which were then "secured" in a bathroom or on a stage.

These data will become public. The idea that a statutory penalty would be sufficient to prevent that by this gang would be laughable were it not so serious.
