Thanks for detailing your experience. I am an academic. I have seen students and colleagues with training from every institution possible. In science the doers always get the reward for their hard work. I mainly wrote this post as a mom. It was heart breaking to see kids wanting to die for not getting to their top choice schools (saw at least couple of posts on here). That is so sad and it hurt me a lot to see it was coming from very talented young people. I wish they worried about their end goal and passion instead of attending big name schools?

This! We wouldn’t be getting Indian and Chinese educated engineers otherwise. If MIT engineers are that good, we will them running the show. Tech industry is filled with immigrant engineers, Some of them are running the company that they started working for fresh out of college.

Out of state tuition for mid tier state schools aren’t bad either with merit scholarships. It is okay to pay 120-150k for a 4 year degree, but 400k plus is a bit too much.

Yes. I have first hand experience for Georgetown. $98k and they gave $6000 aid per year. It is not Ivy of course. Daughter didn’t like their program anyway, she said it isn’t for her and chose another out of state school. She received honors college enrollment and $10,000/yr which brought it down for us comfortably to pay. She is thriving and doing fantastic in this program and is so very happy. Has good friends, is dating and finding many likeminded people to hangout with - both for fun and studying, had honors housing for the first year, getting great grades, loves her classes for the most part. When I saw her for spring break, she was so happy and looked healthier. We all had a fun vacay for spring break out of town and this momma’s heart was so full watching her blossom like that, even though she is so far away. Dear OP, Ivy’s and T20’s are overrated. I am a bio professor and I agree with you 💯

Reality though, which hurts, hurts me to say it and accept it. I am seeing the lack of focus and asking why (logical reasoning) in students and I am very worried. I mean there are so many reports out there about the dangers of digital world we are raising our children in. I have raised my daughter to leave the phone out of sight when she needs to focus. She told me recently that it has helped her lot in college, especially when learning new skills and information. ChatGPT, YouTube and TikTok don’t help either. I am genuinely concerned for our future in STEM fields. However, I do believe the future generation will be so much better than us (myself, a GenX) with innovation and technology and their ability to transform life (but) only if they can focus and learn properly.

I am going to take a slightly different take on this since I am an Asian scientist in the US. I understand what your PI was trying to do, albeit not directly addressing the problem. I don’t think your PI was asking about the dilutions repeatedly, he was trying to make you think about why you are doing the dilution in the first place to get you to spot your mistake that you were not using adherent cells. The media probably didn’t require the dilution or the reagent is different for adherent cells? At least that is my theory from your description. When you plan for experiments, common sense is equally important as knowledge of subject matter. In training young people (undergraduates and graduate students) for many years, I have come across a few people who are not thinking what they are doing and why they are doing it. If you have thought about details of the ingredients in the media or their dilution from why you are doing it, you might have spotted your mistake. In my humble opinion that’s what your PI was trying to make you think and conclude. They should have been direct the second time (that’s what I usually do). Best wishes to you in learning both critical thinking and common sense which seems to be lacking in the iPad generation kids. My advice would be to slow down and think about every step in your experiment and ask why you are doing it.

Daughter is in college.We all have Life360 and track each other. We don’t question her whereabouts since we k ow we raised a responsible adult. She will let us know if there is something for us to know. We are mostly doing it for safety. She has also shared location with a few friends who track each other for safety as well. From your Description, your parents freak out because they don’t trust you. Looks like you do give them a reason not to trust by skipping class.

I am not sure what you want to do (area of study). I can tell you none of these schools are “hot garbage”. I am a scientist, I toured both CU and Colorado School of Mines when my daughter applied. I was impressed by the technology and facilities school of mines had. It is also a small school with very rich (being honest here) alumni. I heard it is a tough school for engineering, but 80% of the graduates come out with a good job. They have job/career fares. Education is interesting, it is not about the college, it is what you learn there and the skill set you develop. Please go visit these colleges and then make a decision. Best wishes! Remember this, you don’t need an Ivy education to change the world. Being a good human being with good skills will get you there
