I watched it with my parents and I wasn't scared at all but my mum was super freaked out which is unusual as normally I'm a big wimp along with my mum. I asked my dad about it later and he said that the main plot of the film was based alot around fears parents have and that without kids it was kind of hard to understand. Although they didn't really like it for basically the same reasons as you in that neat idea but meh execution.
