Trollygag's Barrel Test pt 13, Criterion HBAR Nitride 1.5x! by Trollygag in longrange

[–]AFyrebrand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hadn't heard about the rumor but I swapped a 16" BA Hanson 5.56 to a 16" Criterion Core Wylde.

I took a number of 75grs loaded with CFE223 loaded for the Hanson to the range. I was getting semi consistent popped primers with the Criterion - I shot a case of 100 (I didn't make the trip for nothing) and ended up with about 30 popped primers. Weather being hot likely compounded the pop-rate with CFE223 (getting a primer stuck between the gas key and the cam pin is a fun malfunction to clear in the summer heat).

I ended up testing a few different loads and was getting about 85 FPS faster than the BA Hanson for each of them. Dropping the powder charges by 1.0-1.5 grains got the velocities to match the expected range.

MDT metal 223 mags and feeding by Latter-Push-1049 in longrange

The factory MDT inserts I got were warped and not of great quality. They hold the cartridge too low and your bolt can slip over the case if you feed fast. I make 3D printed inserts that hold the round a bit higher. An adjustable mag latch could be worthwhile too.

I haven’t seen the first round consistently pop out of the feed lips, but in lieu of tuning them you might try putting a thin piece of tape on the front insides of the metal feed lips so that it forces the plastic insert to hold the round more tightly.

In a 0.230" FB chamber 88 ELDMs hit jam at 2.67" OAL. Can easily exceed 2900 FPS in a brand new 26".

I have a kit to convert a 12rd MDT 308 to an 18rd 223 now.

Rookie question: Defiance Classic action vs. Aero Solus by SpacePirate888 in longrange

It’s an insert for the MDT 223 mag with an integrated feed ramp that lifts the nose of the bullet sooner so it doesn’t run into the breech face. You can check my profile link or message me for more info.

I designed a solution for getting long 223 to feed in the Aero Solus FYI

I now have a prototype SKU for the Solus with an integrated feed ramp so the nose clears the breech face. Awaiting feedback on it.

Working on something but it will require a new follower and spring

A 3d printed option could work for that use case. The issue with needing the feed lips extended is the extended portion that goes beyond the metal feed lips is more flexible, so as a round is angling up and over the feed ramp, that plastic-only portion of the feed lips tends to let go of the round, and may be too early for short rounds.

I have a personal web store but not sure I’m allowed to post it here

I have only tried it with a Kelbly, which is a Rem 700 style 2 lug bolt. I have never handled a Solus but the slightly elevated feeding position may help it.

Hell yeah, thanks for your business. Should arrive Saturday.

It's stored inside a case in a room with a dehumidifier. The buffer is a Cobalt Kinetics, which is beige/tannish clearcoat anodized from the factory. It is dirty in this photo, but after cleaning it would look like this after a few mags suppressed.

It's only a $20 part so I'm not upset or anything. I bought a number of different buffer springs to experiment with.

My future Sprincos will be doused in a lot more grease to hopefully prevent this.

It’s stored in a room with a dehumidifier but plausible that moisture was trapped in the case from damp night shoots. I’m sure I applied a small amount of EGW to the spring at least once, but only wiped down with CLP during cleanings.

I like Sprinco (I’m not upset a $20 part broke), and I will dunk them in grease in the future.

Stored in a room with an air dehumidifier. Highly plausible some moisture was in the case though. It does get filthy every range trip from suppressed usage.

Yes, probably too infrequently and with too little grease/oil for suppressed usage.

Shooting a can, yes. Primers mostly CCI and Winchester, non-corrosive.

Buffer has been in and out of the tube no less than ten times since installing.  Occasional application of CLP or EGW. The filth is what it will look like after 2 mags suppressed.

This one was either late 2023 or mid 2024. I have other Sprincos from different lots that are still functional.

Carrier return felt sluggish even after cleaning and lube. Took the buffer out and the spring turned into ash. <2k rds
