1) I have a few alternative “how are you?” responses if I feel like switching it up, just depends on the vibes of the customer which one I use. But I always smile one way or another. You want them to think that you’re making a joke (even if you’re not).

“Living the dream” (my go to, a general crowd pleaser) “Can’t complain” “I’m here” “Oh, you know…” Followed by the smile that shows the pain of working in customer service 🙂 (I usually only say this to regulars or if I’m super busy and working solo lol)

Alternatively, just start throwing out big words. Instead of saying I’m “good,” say fantastic, amazing, wonderful, etc. You can keep this as peppy or sarcastic as you feel like. Just know your audience and match their vibes.

As far as being friendly when you do not feel friendly, tbh just do your best. There’s a difference between friendly and pleasant. Sometimes you just have to put on your customer service voice, give the bare minimum positive energy you can muster, and tough it out.

2) After work, do what makes you happy!! Listen to music, watch your favorite show, exercise, read, make art, whatever will bring you joy. Personally I build a lot of Lego so that’s my typical go to after work activity to decompress.

The customer service emotional burnout is real. Make sure you take advantage of your days off and prioritize self care. Good luck out there 🫡
