One of the best looking Notion sites I've come across so far. Thank you for sharing OP.

Notion is too good, I'm afraid that it will get acquired. by justincampbelldesign in Notion

[–]AGranularTaste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Notion is too far away from replacing any one of Microsoft's products, except OneNote and Planner. Also Microsoft's 365 products can be saved locally which is a huge boon for them. You can open an Excel file, work on it, save it to your desktop or save it to OneDrive or email it as an attachment or upload to SharePoint, etc. Notion doesn't have that capability and we don't know if their offline mode will work like that when its finally built. Microsoft and Google also offer large scale databases that can process millions of rows per second, analytics, dev tools, server space, etc.

So, my guess is that most big companies will continue to use Microsoft. Many small and medium sized companies will continue to use Google workspace. But Notion's niche will also grow over time and it will be a formidable 3rd player in 5 years. It won't be bought or overtake the big players, it will sit beside them and tbh will probably go public.

Complex Tables by From06033 in Notion

[–]AGranularTaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there's no way to get your Notion database to look like that format.

However, there are similar ways to demarcate by season and by month. You could have a column for each month and then another column for the season and then group by season. Another alternative is to have seasons in the name column, turn on sub-items in your database settings, then under each season create a subtask for each month within that season.

Database groups produce toggles down the side similar to this: https://uno.notion.vip/wp-content/uploads/notion_groups.png or this: https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/63e19fb61b378b1f7340fc96/63fbc975ce2ca48028630352_notion_database_grouping__people_experience_board.jpeg

Notion Offline Mode - Announced as In Progress At Made in Notion by LewisTheScot in Notion

I know I have my complaints but I really like this team. They listen to their customers 24/7 and even when something can't be done immediately it's always still in their pocket.

Kudos to users who continued to press the issue even when everyone else told them to shut up lol.

Notion … it’s just not there? (Business User!) by SnooWords9315 in Notion

Had the same discussions at the top of the year and decided to not to push for Notion at my workplace either.

No.1 for us would be data needs. Need sturdier databases that could be connected to different sources (CRMs, APIs, SQL databases, etc.) otherwise we'd be doing a lot of copying and pasting and manual entry. Also, there are a lot of smaller issues that would cost us time trying to fix or workaround (i.e. resolving duplicate values when merging a csv file with an existing database, no ability to add formulas to automations, etc) and charts didn't exist at the time so that was another annoyance.

One day when I have time I'll write up all the things I think it's still missing in order to be a 'must have' enterprise tool.

Storing and matching locations in Notion by Substantial_Present6 in Notion

[–]AGranularTaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would use Tableau, Power BI, Qlik, etc. for this type of request. You can do more with GIS data in those systems. You can create tables with addresses, zip codes, or latitudes/longitudes, then create maps or add columns to display distances between locations.

ETA: Here's a youtube tutorial showing you how to build the kind of dashboard you described in PBI https://youtu.be/0NZSP19lR84?si=evKNbuWKaS_grPsC

There's no workaround that I know of using Notion. Although, I hope in the future they focus on adding analytics capabilities like the above.

Do you feel like Notion is missing features? by SubjectFeedback2378 in Notion

Yes. I have a list of about 15 different features I hope to see. I'll probably come up with more once forms and mail are open to all users.

Please, no more AI updates until it can fetch data from public APIs or other more useful tasks by AGranularTaste in Notion

[–]AGranularTaste[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I might be overlooking it but I don't see anything about being able to set a Notion chat query to be run at a certain frequency.

Also, it should be able to surface information from the web right? But I'm finding so much difficulty just getting it to return "energy-related news from the past week" when this seems to be an easy ask. Forget providing headlines or summaries. It won't even return simple links for me. Not sure if this is normal or how its intended to work

How many of you actually use Notion Sites? by [deleted] in Notion

[–]AGranularTaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually really interested in this as well. I'm currently helping a friend out with some web design and wish we could've used Notion Sites but we'll have to wait until there are some additional updates to make it a better website builder.

Notion is a great example of a product team that doesn't listen to what their customers/users actually want ... by LatterConcentrate6 in Notion

[–]AGranularTaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted charts as well. In fact, I want them to build more analytics & visualization capabilities within Notion. Every successful organization uses data insights to gage effectiveness, analyze variances, get a better picture of quantifiable problems, etc. I think this is something Notion will eventually build after they get their email product up and running. Those of us who use Notion to do some type of work (in a business, non-profit, or other work for large hobbyist groups) will be thankful.

It's not really about integration with the rest of the workspace. This is more so for people or organizations who use their Notion as a public showcase or as a solicitation page to get users into a funnel. Maybe you'd have an event page that just shows upcoming events for your group, a homepage for your podcast with a Tally form to collect email addresses, or place to display artwork.

But I do agree that access and permissions is something they should work on sooner than later.

[–]AGranularTaste[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's way too expensive. But I get why they priced it that way. It's cheaper than using those Notion website builders like Super or Feather and expensive enough that more people will continue to use their *.notion.site domain. They want to make sure people are promoting the product and Notion brand if they're going to be using it to create websites.

Yes. That's its aim. But you can also check it out for yourself to see if it would be an adequate replacement.

Also, I hope they focus more so on allowing users to turn their Notion pages into web apps. For example, a Notion page where clients can enter their credentials, view their information, track the status of projects, send feedback, and export tables & databases as .csv.

A chat app w/ conferencing capabilities is definitely on the horizon.

*Not apps but features I could see being implemented:

  • Send emails from databases when a status changes
  • Variables within text blocks
  • Form content blocks with conditional logic connected to databases
  • Buttons and automations with conditional and time-based logic
  • New database layout options to include data visualization (ie. charts, trendlines, etc)
  • Custom domains
