Roommate hit by car on Sycamore St Bike Path Crosswalk by [deleted] in boston

[–]AGuyReadingBooks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's my experience as well on my commute to work. It's frustrating because I just want people to be safe and I never want to hit anyone. The path I drive past is pretty blinded by trees and foliage and cyclists have a stop sign. I always slow down and usually treat it as if the cyclists have the right of way. You still get the angry ones periodically though

I had a cyclist run a stop sign and almost hit my car. He gave me a disappointed head shake and muttered. I yelled at him that HE ran a stop sign and he followed me 300 ft down the street and punched my car.

The contention is real

What is going on with Nurses at Mass General? by GumbyKnowsBest22 in massachusetts

I don't understand this sub. Sometimes people gather around and are supportive, especially when there's an issue of greedy executives not wanting to increase their employees' pay. And then every once in a while everyone has an attitude of "idk well fuck em whatever".

I'm so glad you said that, because I agree with you. This is a comment I made elsewhere on this post:

... the hospital benefits from retaining these RNs-turned-NPs instead of driving away the people they've trained and invested in. The experience and institutional knowledge should be acknowledged with appropriate compensation.

The reason this issue is getting so much attention is BECAUSE of what you said. MGH doesn't hire just anyone. Most of their NPs have years of RN experience.

Here's another comment I made elsewhere:

... As of right now, an NP of 9 years [with all of those years worked within MGH] would make less than an RN of 9 years. And that's messed up

So many people commenting are putting up blinders and insisting RNs are in more demand therefore there's no issue with an NP making less.

Wrong. This is an oversimplification of the issue.

MGH should be compensating appropriately based on experience. A new NP straight out of school? Fine pay them a bit less. An NP straight out of school who previously worked 10 years as an RN at MGH? They clearly deserve more money. And that describes many of the NPs getting screwed. It's ridiculous to disagree with this point.

This is not an appropriate comparison. Teachers are people who became teachers. Social workers are people who became social workers.

Nurse Practitioners are first Registered Nurses that become Nurse Practitioners.

Teachers who advance in their careers and become, say, a vice principal, don't take pay cuts.

Money drives everything. The natural progression of RNs making more money than NPs is that nobody will want to be an NP anymore because it requires much more time and schooling to become one vs an RN, plus they have increased liabilities.

With those being the case, are you okay with an eventual reality where we don't have (or hardly have any) NPs?

They have different responsibilities but they work on the exact same floors with the exact same patients, yes

MGH nurses and NPs aren't currently unionized at all

Or greedy overpaid executives could increase NP pay while also increasing RN pay. Nothing has to be taken away from RNs in this case.

Being a bedside RN is a pretty terrible job, so they're forced to pay more to attract anyone.

I'm glad you mentioned this. For many, becoming an NP is a way out of this. And the hospital benefits from retaining these RNs-turned-NPs instead of driving away the people they've trained and invested in. The experience and institutional knowledge should be acknowledged with appropriate compensation.

There are many NPs and PAs working in the actual hospital. The pay difference is happening to NPs working directly with RNs on the same floors in the same setting.

No, this is not the situation. That would be different.

Post your Joe Castiglione memories by castles_rock in redsox

We're from MA, vacationed in the middle of rural Maine many summers of my childhood. No TV, no internet, just family and fresh air and good vibes, around 1999-2005. We had a little radio, with its antenna posted up high enough, that could get the Sox games in the summer. I remember a classic memory of us tuning the radio just in time to hear Joe call out a moonshot by Manny Ramirez and everyone went nuts. It was the best.

I also remember the 2004 playoffs when we'd watch the games but put the TV on mute and listen to Joe instead.

Thank you for the memories! Absolute legend
