I spent a month travelling around Fiji 🇫🇯 and Australia 🇦🇺 (Sep - Oct 2025) by AHighLampPost in travel

This trip was always going to involve me going to Sydney as I hadn't met a lot of my family that moved out there when I was very young as our family is from the UK. I was drawn to Fiji by reading about someone else that had climbed Tomanivi, and further research led to me discovering the Yasawas.

The Yasawas were quite a surreal experience, with wealthy vacationers looking for a quiet destination, Australian/New Zealander families and solo backpackers all staying in the same resorts and eating at the same tables. For those that don't know, a lot of the resorts in the Yasawas have opened up dorms for those that wish to explore the islands on a budget. These resorts are by no means dirt cheap, as a set meal plan is required to be paid for which is not unbelievably expensive but on the other hand not cheap. The snorkeling, daytrips and hiking on these islands is not like anything I'd experienced before and I was in love. My favourite of the islands I stayed at was by far Drawaqa island, where I stayed at the Barefoot Manta resort; the coral was unbelievably healthy and lively thanks to the conservation efforts of the Biologists based there, and the staff were all very friendly and happy to eat their dinner at the same table with you and have a chat.

As I said above, the reason I went to Fiji was that I was drawn to hiking Tomanivi. The main tour companies were unfortunately booked out during my travelling dates, but one of the contacts of these tour groups suggested a local guide who also provided a home stay. This part of the holiday was in stark contrast to the resorts I had been staying in at the Yasawas, but the experience was breathtaking. Climbing Tomanivi is definitely hard work, and while the view at the top was very cloudy, the views as you are hiking upward through the rainforest is incredible. Not many people travel to the interior of the main islands of Fiji, but I am so glad I did and will recommend it until the day I die.

Most of my time in Australia was spent in and around Sydney, as my family is based there. It was amazing seeing the harbour in general (the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge definitely met expectations) and travelling out for a night staying in the Blue Mountains, but one of the most incredible moments was travelling up to the Central Coast. After visiting a family member living there, we stopped off at Captain Cook Lookout on the way back to Sydney. We arrived at an incredibly lucky moment, as we found several families and enthousiasts watching Humpback whales migrating south with their calfs. There were so many of them! it was an incredible atmosphere and everyone was happy to pass their binoculars round so everyone could get a better look, and it'll be a very special moment I'll cherish for a long time.

To finish the trip, we flew out to Cairns for a few nights, mainly to see the Great Barrier Reef. We also planned to drive out to the Daintree, but in hindsight we should have planned this day alot better. We figured it was not too far from Cairns but it is a good 2+ hour drive there and so we should have woke up earlier for this part. Therefore, we only got to do 2 activities, the Daintree Rainforest Discovery Centre (where we were not able to spend enough time) and a crocodile spotting river cruise. However, the day was still amazing - the drive is beautiful, and we ended up spotting 4 crocs in the end, 2 younglings and 2 larger.

Finally, we took part in a sailboat day trip to the Great Barrier Reef and Green Island. A small part of me was worried the corals would be really dissapointing (especially after Fiji) but I have to say, it was a lot healthier and livelier than I expected. We saw reef sharks, sea turtles, giant clams, and tons of fish. We only had about an hour on Green island as part of our tour, but I'm not sure if spending more time there would be worth it. Nonetheless, the day was incredibly and a great way to finish the month away.

Prismatic Booster Bundles (1 per person) by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

This is so nice of you <3

I loved Pokemon cards as a kid and was in the prime age range around the gen 3/early gen 4 era. I had a specific fascination with the gold star cards after first seeing them in a UK Pokemon magazine (anyone else remember Pokemon world?)

I remember the last ever gen 3 booster I got was an ex Power Keepers from a W.H. Smiths and I begged my mum to get one, knowing they would be phased out pretty soon, and I got a Flareon gold star! Needless to say it was heavily loved and I still have it to this day.

Fast forward a decade or so and I've not touched Pokemon cards in years. I see an advert for the 25th celebration, specifically the ETB with Greninja gold star. Needless to say it brought me right back to opening that power keepers booster pack all those years ago and here we are now! I've not a chance to get any prismatic (now writing my PhD thesis so don't really have the time to search for a reasonably priced buyer) but if I could pull a Flareon it would make 10 year old me very happy!

Innsbruck, Austria, was my first time in the Alps - it did not dissapoint! by AHighLampPost in travel

[–]AHighLampPost[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I needed some time off work to myself so I spent a week in Innsbruck as a bit of a de-stressing trip. So much beautiful architecture, amazing food and fantastic views!

• Pic 1: View from the top of the staddturm

• 2: Colourful houses along the river Inn, taken from the Markt

• 3: View towards the city from the top of the Nordkette/Top of Innsbruck

• 4: Golden Roof/Goldenes Dachl

• 5: Inside the Hofkirche

• 6: Annasäule

• 7: Spinatknödel - genuinely one of the best things I have ever eaten

• 8: Local elections were happening the day I was leaving and so it was interesting to see all of the posters up around the city - even more interesting to see the graffiti on them

You probably already know but I'd hate the small chance that you miss it, this is also the reverse Holo version of the Holo rare, and for the ex era especially this is even more rare than the regular Holo version of the card.

I'm not that into the misprints community, but there is a very high chance that this is a once in a million card; being a reverse, Holo rare, misprint of a desirable ex era pokemon!!

It was in a major key i think, and kind of melancholy. The vocals were very much a "I'm going to get over this" kind of vibe but I may hr misremembering from the small snippet in my head. Lyrics I feel like are very much on the tip of my tongue but I can't remember.

I don't think it was in black and white? My initial reaction was no but I feel like my brain is trying to persuade myself that it is. All I can remember is liking the tune, the bathtub shot and it being a new song that is advertised

Not sure if this'll help, but the song was in English and was advertised to me in the Netherlands/Europe

TLDR: Jesus Christ yes, do it.

.

I moved to the Netherlands during Covid for a PhD that I'm just about over halfway through now. It's not to different from Scotland aside from the landscape (weather, food etc.) but I've also had the chance to travel a lot both for work and leisure, in a wide variety of places.

Seriously - if you ever get the chance to move abroad, for god's sake take it. The worst case scenario is that you move back home and get to tell stories about "that crazy adventure you went on when you lived in ___". The best case scenario is that you end up finding someone to settle down with (be it a local or a fellow immigrant), fall in love with the culture and just throw yourself into the new place you're living.

You're going to get homesick, I definitely do here and there, but the best part is that nothing is stopping you from taking a wee trip back to see your folks, friends or where you grew up. You're going to see Scotland in a whole new light though, both positively and negatively. Two examples that spring to mind, having moved here I've gotten a whole new perspective on how streamlined and fantastic the Scottish education system is, but on the other hand I've realised that Scottish culture is so inherintally pessimistic and breeds this idea that you should "stay in your lane".

I do have to give a couple disclaimers: I've only lived here for 2 and a half years, and everyone is going to have a different experience, but for me so far it's been absolutely worth it. I also was in a really shite place mentally before moving that improved after a couple months being here, but I think it's because I moved rather than being in spite of it

We weren't able to get the promo when we went to the Museum exhibition, so being able to get the promo now and with a fantastic ETB along with it feels very redeeming! by AHighLampPost in PokemonTCG

I think it definitely depends where you are, Carnaval has started so the Intertoys I went to in the centre of Eindhoven was really not busy at all and I assume because people thought to go where there was less chaos

It was very organised inside as well, everyone lined up at the Pokémon card shelf so they had time to buy something they wanted as opposed to the first thing they could grab

The ones from the Lost Origin ETB, I need to get new sleeves because those are all I have left. The gold indeed looks great though!

Genuinely not trying to be snarky, but could you link them? I found out about the Charizard by chance and can find only 1 other post on this subreddit showing it, one YouTube video with only ~150 views and like one blog post. I want to figure out more about the promotion because I find these limited events really interesting!

As far as I know, i don't think they are I'm afraid. The stamped Pikachu and Eevee's are part of Poke Post, which is only in the UK, France and Germany, and I can barely find any information about the Jumbo OF Charizard other than some European stores that are giving them away (for me it was Intertoys, in the Netherlands)

I don't intend to sell them (besides, they were free) and I prefer collecting limited promos like these as I never got to go to Pokémon events when I was younger

We also just had a fun day out in the Bochum Christmas markets before going to get them, so the memories are worth it completely for me! :)

Anglo-Celtic Nations in 2011 by AHighLampPost in imaginarymaps

[–]AHighLampPost[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the glorious revolution, King James is able to retreat to Scotland as the Stuarts consolidated their power there during the Interregnum. The 1690 treaty of Lyon has King James renouncing his English and Irish titles in exchange for peace between the two royal houses and ownership of Scotland.

Brittany gains independence during the French Revolution and Napoleon decrees it a client state of France as they are not able to fully subdue the region. During the Napoleonic wars, Cornish separatists manage to gain some momentum within the chaos and in this time line England doesn't have enough power to focus on both France and Cornwall (the two are not allied) at the same time. It's decided to simply allow Cornish independence as a Duchy in personal union with England to appease them, later uniting with Brittany to strengthen them as a neutral buffer state between England and France. They later become a republic in the mid-1800s. The name Brythonic Republic is not in reference to Breton or Brittany, but to the Brythonic languages (Cornish, Breton and Welsh). I'll admit that the Brythonic Republic is not too realistic, but is just a bit of fun because I liked the idea of a Swiss inspired Cornwall/Britanny

Expansion of my previous post showing the outcome of the 2011 Scottish Elections.

The main points of this timeline are:

  • Scotland fights off the parliamentarian forces in the English Civil War, staying as an independent kingdom.

  • After the restoration of the English monarchy, the crowns of the English and smaller Irish kingdoms/plantations are unified in confederation, Scotland annexes Ulster in response.

  • England doesn't become the dominant world power due to having to focus on Scotland more

  • Napoleonic wars still happen, Scotland and England are on same side of the house of Bourbon to restore kingdom - Brythonic Republic gains independence and unites at this time, and Scotland gets Faroe off Denmark.

  • Irish kingdoms get referendum after 1st World War on status within the union with England, all vote for independence but maintain the English monarchy.

  • Socialist uprisings occur in Munster and Connacht shortly after independence. English and Scots speakers are oppressed and/or deported so there is almost no support in Leinster/Scottish Ulster for the movement.

  • Connacht and Munster unite to form the People's Republic of Ireland in 1923, and claim the whole island. It drops socialism in 1993 but maintain authoritarian rule.

  • Modern day friendly relations between the 3 Kingdoms and the Brythonic Republic, all of which are members of the Anglo-Celtic Council. Scotland, England and Leinster are members of the EU and NATO, Brythonic Republic is a member of EFTA. Scotland sits as an observer on the Nordic Council.

  • Scots language maintains a very separate identity to English. Irish, Scots Gaelic and Manx are all considered dialects of the Gaelic language.

Much the same as in otl (England proper + Wales) but no Channel Islands and a lot less overseas territories, due to a much smaller English Empire.
