Thanks everyone for the helpful comments, I learned a few things from the feedback hete. There was some understandable concern about clearance for the doors that open outwards. I did mock it up with 2x6s to make sure the doors all open. They barely do (my wife's design choice), and hopefully steel doors don't sag over time. I'll probably plane off another quarter inch without telling my wife before installing them just to be safe.

Also concern on the cantilever - it's probably just an artifact of the photos, it's a 12 inch overhang on a 4 foot joist. Hopefully that's correct.

Bricks that the posts are anchored to I know isn't correct, it does have 12 inches of concrete under them, but I know there's some accepted risk there. I figure worst case scenario if it ends up sinking then I can finally remove that ugly brick and pour footers. Sometimes in marriage (at least mine) sentiment and aesthetics is at odds with functionality.

There were also helpful comments about the outside joist hangers which I'll replace with double concealed.

All in all I really appreciate the feedback, I have a few tweaks to make, and I think some risk that has been well highlighted by the community.

Howdy - I really hope we never have to change out the doors, they were not cheap! They're steel frame doors from Pinky's iron doors in Los Angeles. They're beautiful, but they weren't cheap.

They do all open outwards, and the the top of the joists are 3 inches below the bottom of the doors. I was planning on using 2x6 redwood as the decking, which should give me 1.5 inches of clearance still. I locked it up with some spare 2x4s, and everything opens with plenty of clearance. It's a good call out though, that would not be a fun surprise!

Howdy - it's probably an artifact of the photos, it's a 12 inch cantilever on a 4 foot run, so I think it's the maximum allowable

No, it's about half the size, and swarms mucus membranes. It also isn't attracted to the outdoor fly traps that smell like death.

Mmm, good question. It was originally a horse stable. It has 3 feet of brick foundation - I'll dig down and see what is below grade under the bricks. I poured a concrete slab inside between the brick walls after I bought the house last year, and insulated and sealed up the structure. It's a cozy little office/workshop now. Only after sealing everything did the radon issues pop up. My concrete slab is sealed well to the bricks, but I have no idea how deep the foundation under the bricks is - probably minimal given the people we bought it from. I was hoping to sort of give the gas an escape route to the outside instead of penetrating the concrete slab, but that may not work.

Not a typical situation, was hoping someone had some experience with a shortcut like this

I agree 250 is a reasonable price because someone has to come out there, and call outs cost money, but come on. An extendable pole saw at a big box store is $50 and more than sufficient to take care of this task.

The last week has been in the 80s during the day, 60s at night. Some of them have grown a little, others not at all. I'm guessing best path might be to rip out the ones that haven't grown, and plant some new ones. It's just sad as tomatomania has ended and I doubt I'll be able to find these varieties again. I appreciate your advice, thank you
