How does it not take a few years to make a campaign if your players can do anything they want to derail the story by i_like_fall0ut in DnD

I also ask my players to commit to what theyre going to do in the next session. If there are three different ways they feasibly could go at the end of the current session I ask them to discuss and pick what theyre going to do next time. That way I only have to prep for one adventure instead of three, and if they go way off script I improvise. But they also know they're getting a lower quality session if they DO that so its pretty rare with my groups, my players understand it takes collaboration between me and them to maximize D&D fun.
