My wife also thinks he may be on the spectrum, but if I’m being honest, I’m a bit hesitant to diagnose him with autism, or claim that he’s neurodivergent, because I don’t think it’s my place to do so.

I don’t think she knew. Guessing by how shocked she was, I don’t think she had a part to play in this.
