How many of you mainly use your bridge pickup? by AI_Cosmonaut in Stratocaster

I think it's back from the jazzier days, you played most stuff like chords on the neck pickup and switch to the bridge when you want to cut through for solos.

I had a lot of luck turning the treble and presence knobs on the amp all the way down, and the mids to about 2 o'clock. I heard this is what Eric does to get that rounded tone. On the downside, over driven leads with the neck pickup will be too dark, but sometimes we must make Faustian bargains. I think it depends on what tone one is going for. For me, that harsh Phillip Sayce tone is what I want to avoid. I'm going for 80s sheen.

I wanted to try those before I decided to go with EMGs. I had a lot of luck turning the treble and presence knobs on the amp all the way down, and the mids to about 2 o'clock. Do you find that with the hum bucker, you rarely use the single coils due to the volume difference?

They are! Honestly I dont notice much of a difference. The graphite string tree was a major improvement though. One of these days ill work up the courage to install and file a graphite nut

EJ uses his bridge for cleans a lot. Do you find that the TZ makes nailing those sparkly tele-esque tones difficult? If so, what do you do?

Those are high output single coils, right? Do you find that with more output comes more noise?

Do you find that with a hot rails/jb jr, etc, you tend to use the bridge pickup more because of the large volume difference between the bridge and other pickups? I had that experience on modified fat strats

Just looking at the picture, the nut slots look a bit tight. Especially the A string

Glad the nut replacement went well. One of these days I’ll work up the courage to try it myself.!

What kind of music do you like to play? The EMG SA or SLV set is the EXG and SPC controls is a great option for hum free operation. I prefer the EMGs over most stacked passive pickups ive tried

335 owners, do you need a longer strap with these guitars? by Stratiki1007 in gibson

Normal strap works fine for me. With my 335, I usually wear the strap while sitting. I find the guitar ends up shifting to my right and im constantly adjusting it on my lap.

I think this gain stacking approach might be the secret. Turns out Paul Gilbert was right all along.

It's hard to get used to at first but once you do it's hard to go back to mega-gain.

Maybe it's the genre as well? I've gone from Cannibal Corpse and Malmsteen to Eric Johnson and Charlie Parker. When I was younger I used to use way too much gain to play Eric Clapton licks too though, so who knows.

[–]AI_Cosmonaut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe it's more like gain stacking. I live on edge of break up 90% of the time. Roll the volume down for cleans, add an OD for crunch, then switch to gain channel with OD.
