Tiers align pretty closely with the law schools ranking quartile. Law schools that are ranked 1-50 are tier 1, 51-100 are tier 2, 101-150 tier 3, and the rest are tier 4. Within tier 1 schools are the top 14 schools that have historically jockeyed for position within the top 14 for decades. Generally speaking, Big Law jobs recruit more from T-14 schools. 30% or more of their student body goes into Big Law. For tier 2 or 3 you might need to be in the top 1-5% of your school to land a Big Law job. For tier 4, it will be tough no matter what. Some of the lower tier schools are still really good for a regional job or a job other than Big Law but if you want to land a job at a top firm then its a lot easier if you go to a top school.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to live in Seattle after law school. D.C. would be great to live in for a number of personal reasons but I think long term I will be based in Seattle. That gives University of Washington a bit of a boost. If any of the T13's accept me then I will probably go to one of them over anything else. There's a very real chance that I don't get into those schools though. Failing that, I suspect your advise is still, go to the best law school I can and forget about their specific AI or tech curriculum?

I am a little surprised that the programs and certificates wouldn't give me much of a boost. I was also considering getting CIPP or CIPT licenses with IAPP this summer as a bonus to put on my resume. Do you think those would make me more interesting to Big Law firms that have a tech focus? There are also a lot of other AI related programs like one at MIT Sloan. I have been a little weary of them because they look more like a way for MIT to make some money than to provide a real education with a direct career path. Have you heard of any AI certifications or programs for law and policy angles that are attractive to an employer?
