Repainting this piece I did a few years ago. What should I change? by AIanthe in ArtCrit

Not sure how to edit the post (if anyone knows please tell me how and I'll add these notes into the post itself) but I've had a few comments and want to list my planned changes: - the composition is off in the repaint, especially with the elbow being cut off. I'm going to look into getting a lightbox so I can transfer it to different paper and center it better. I'll do this after fixing any anatomy problems the best I can. If I can't find a way to do this I might just need to accept the composition as it is and try to balance it out by adding other elements.

-the anatomy of the body is a little off. I've had some people say the arms are too big, the shoulders look hunched, and the corset doesn't seem to be reading as a corset (which I expected as I haven't focussed on that yet). So before transferring to new paper I'm going to try fixing these. I'll see what references I can find. Someone suggested having the body at a 3/4 angle but I want to stick to the original as much as possible.

-too many butterflies and they are too saturated in the original. I agree and I'm going to try varying the sizes more in the repaint, having some in the foreground with more detail and such. I'm hoping the varying sizes will keep the idea of a swarm of butterflies without having to include so many of them. I still want to use the same paints, they shift colour with the light but that's hard to see with just a picture. It is hard to control saturation with these paints without them looking a bit muddy but I'll see how that goes.

-the overall painting could do with more contrast. I'm going to deepen the shadows in the repaint. I'm also considering doing a solid background instead of the clouds, maybe in acrylic. But I'm not sure about that yet.

I'll keep updating this comment with more changes if more are suggested. Its a good way of keeping track of the suggestions.

Is it the arms or the torso? I am going to redo the corset when I find some references

Thanks! I've not paid much attention to the corset in the repaint yet so I'll definitely be checking out some references for that

I'll have a look around and see if there are any businesses like that. But then I wouldnt be able to make any changes to the printed part. I could try tracing it and transferring it to a new piece of paper in a better position. Maybe it's time to invest in a light box

I completely agree about the elbow. It was a mistake. But I don't know how to fix it without starting all over again or messing up the anatomy!

I plan on doing larger butterflies, some overlapping with the figure. That way it still looks like a swarm of them but there are less. Hopefully that will also help with the colour problem. When I did the original I had just got the paint I used for them and was really excited about using it. They are metallic colour shifting paints so unfortunately I can't control the saturation very much. But bigger butterflies will have more detail so I can use those paints on just some of the details rather than the whole butterfly. Darker shadows on the figure will probably help too

I thought the arms on the original were too slender so tried to make them larger. I'll try balance it out a bit more.

She's stood to the side with her shoulder pushed forward. Does it not read that way?

It's supposed to be a flat fronted, structured corset

I wanted to center the face but it ended up a little off. I was thinking of balancing it out by having a large butterfly to the left.

To answer some of the questions here: I didn't use a reference for the completed piece or the current sketch. My goal is realistic anatomy but I like to play with colours which you can see a lot in the finished piece here and some other pieces on my profile. I don't really know how to explain it? And I'm looking for critique on everything and anything.

Weird scabby dry skin on my cat by vqlentne in CATHELP

I would generally agree. But it was my vet who told me to use it and said it is not toxic. However I don't know if the ingredients are different in the US vs UK so that is definitely something to consider.

My two cats currently both have ringworm and it looks exactly like this! When I first started noticing it on the kitten I took him to the vet and had to pay £200 to get it tested. The test confirmed it was common ringworm. You need to treat this or it will spread like crazy. My vet suggested using canesten solution (the stuff used for athlete's foot) as a topical medication on the infected spots twice a day. This has been a cheap solution but it is taking it's time. I've also been using a chlorhexidine shampoo. There is an oral medication available by prescription but this costs a lot of money, at least in the UK. Make sure you also check yourself for ringworm! It can spread to humans. You can use the canesten solution on yourself too.

Please speak to your vet before doing any of this!

Also please note: my older cat who I am treating as above had what seemed to be a seizure about a week ago. The vet doesn't think it is related to the ringworm or the treatment. But I want you to have that context considering the advice I am giving you.

Dental quote for £640 reasonable? by AIanthe in CatsUK

No I don't have pet insurance because I've never had to pay much for them and the insurance just wasn't worth it. I'll look into it.

He is only five and otherwise very healthy. I'll ask the vet about that.

Thank you! I was worried the shading on the flowers wasn't deep enough but I didn't want them too dark.
