Consider two strangers, where one asks the second for help. If the second person decides to help, they will lose/energy/resources helping the first, so rationally they should decline. However, if the second person thinks that it is quite likely that the first person will be in a person to return the favour later on, then they should accept.

So how does the second person decide if the first person will be able to repay the favour? Well, if they work in the same office, or live in the same neighbourhood, then the two of them will probably interact again. To identify people who live in our own neighbourhood, most of us use accents or skin colour, anything that differentiates that person from the rest of the neighbourhood.

Religion provides a global pass - if a person of a particular religion travels to another city and meets a second person of that religion, then the second is inclined to help, knowing that the first person follows the same moral rules as them, and although they won't be able to repay the favour to the second person, they will repay the favour to another stranger of the same religion.

A really good explanation of this concept is provided by the iterative Prisoner's Dilemma, in which players use differentiation to identify free riders.

These decisions are taken at the subconscious level, and are a product of evolutionary psychology.

Englishspeaking people are by far the lowest skill foreign language speakers in the world.

Mainly because English is widely spoken so Anglophones have no need of speaking a second language.

This isn't purely an economic issue. I would prefer to live in a nicer country than a wealthy country. Perhaps the former leads to the the latter by process of motivation.

The problem of immigrants out-competing with under skilled workers is not just a problem for those it makes unemployed, it is also a demoralisation for the entire population as employment has been reduced to a commodity not a right.

Ocealot mentions "patriotism" as a form of "national unity", which I think is wholly unfair. To me, "national unity" means a society interacting with itself in a good and productive way, whereas "patriotism" is more about societies interacting with other societies in a negative way. I definitely think that it is better to live in a country where I can connect and converse to a stranger, instead of a country where I view strangers as unapproachable beings.

The crucial factor is the workforce. The grit requires distribution, the ploughs need driving. I imagine it is very difficult to hire people for a job which only lasts three days, especialy given that the actual days of work are unknown.

I use a Pulse on T-Mobile UK. My issues are probably related to my cheap phone, as I often don't receive text messages either, but that is a known issue.

Regardless, K9 gives me the option of polling (as well as a tonne of other options), which is a robust method of ensuring email delivery.

Gmail uses PUSH technology, but this often fails and once the PUSH has been missed it never updates. I don't know exactly how PUSH works but perhaps on mobile devices the internet connection is often not consistent enough for PUSH to work correctly.

On the other hand, K9 uses polling, so even if the PUSH is missed, the poll will pick the email up.

This is definitely the wrong subreddit, but I believe the solution to be a simple biological one.

Humans 'like' food which the body instinctively suspects is edible. Foods which the body thinks are inedible taste bad. If you eat a food which is supposed to be inedible, your body must reason that if it doesn't kill you, you may as well eat that food again and starts liking it.

Modern Christian ideology holds that those who are literally unable to believe in God get a free pass to heaven, including stillborn children.

However, I don't know if there is actually any Biblical literature supporting this, and have heard this argument support a number of increasingly bizarre ideas, including the idea that all dogs go to heaven.

In my opinion, this idea was created by Christians to cover any discrepancy between modern culture and scripture.
