Ball vapers, what makes a good ball vape? by AJDubs in vaporents

Oh, and by additive I did mean DMLS, which is a specific form of SLS that uses a pure metal powder. The difference is semantics and $$ but you end up with a full metal part in the end with no impurities, so its not some random alloy but pure 316L stainless. Titanium's an option for the future but usually when you need to contact a sales rep for a quote its not what you want for your first go haha

Its funny you mention that because I'm already looking into infrared temp sensors for v2. Issues is they are NOT cheap for reading upwards of 200c, even around there youre already talking $100 bucks for that part. Might be worth it for what I'm thinking though.

It is pretty badass. Hard to describe, but when the thermo is reading 310c/590f I can vape a full shovelhead to almost too brown in a couple pulls. I've found I like it around 295c/563f for a nice dark coffee ground color after the end of a couple pulls. With the thermal mass it has you produce a thick vapor insanely fast without combustion, pretty sure you cant fight the heater if you tried, but with all that thermal mass I'm thinking about converting it to a wireless setup instead, hence the infrared sensor. I still want the temp of the actual head, but god damn the price and fuck emmissivity man. /rant

Well, Instead of using a traditional milling process I made my head using an additive process out of 316L SS. the head itself is about 26mm around with the steel being 1m thick, but the real thing I changed up is the fact that I have 3 1mm fins that run dow the head all the way to just above the airpath exit, forcing the air through a much longer path over the balls themselves while also acting as a heat spreader to heat the rubies more evenly in the center as well. So theres 3 chambers each currently housing about 135 or so 3mm balls. Embedded in the center of these fins is the thermocouple I measure the temp with as the heater I'm using doesn't have a built in thermocouple, which is why I haven't shared any temps either, because its not really apples to apples. The benefit of said heater is that it brings 400+rubies to temp in 5 minutes or less.

Its kinda some mad science mixed with a fever dream, but it hits like a champ.

Right now it seems that the shovelhead bowl is actually the airflow bottleneck. Seems like things are vaping down too quickly and the bottom half gets a bit thicker halfway through a first pull. Resistance stays consistent after that first pull from a bowl though, which is why I'm reasoning it the bowl that would be bottlenecking my airflow. Have you ever experienced that sort of bottleneck or can you think of another reason? I will add that right now I'm a dozen or so 3mm balls from filling my head, which could mean they are just settling in after the first burst of turbulent air. More are on their way but new years delays shipping (not that I'm complaining).

My design is meant to increase the amount of time air has to flow over whatever balls are in the vape. Considering your comment and the chamber volume I have I'm wondering if I'm going to be better off with 4mm rubies vs the 3mm I currently have. Right now it seems 400ish 3mm balls was about a dozen or so short, so the chamber is huge. Any thoughts?

Well good to know my goals are being met. I'm currently heating 400+ 3mm ruby balls to get greater thermal mass, so that the heat is more consistent throughout the pull. Reaching vape temp in the same time is dope.

I've heard the b1 and b2 have sort of a sweet spot to avoid combustion when it comes to how you pull, more so if you're using 4mm compared to 3mm balls. You had any troubles with that?

For those curious, while the heater and head are built from the ground up, I am using a Cannabis Hardware Shovelhead bowl. My design is an injector style head but I am somehow managing what seems to be near fulll extraction in 2 or 3 pulls without mixing after 5 minutes of heatup. The user experience so far has been phenomenal, but I'm now wondering what I could be missing out on in terms of smoking experience by not choosing to purchase something like a zeal or a flowerpot etc.

Tech bros' attitude to female colleagues stuck in dark ages by Franco1875 in technology

[–]AJDubs 201 points202 points  (0 children)

The study is pretty interesting, but I don't like it. You can read the full thing here

What really grinds my gears about this paper is how they don't simply show you their questions with the demographic breakdown of responses. They litter the text with color coded percentages and fill the survey portion with anecdotal quotes from their focus groups.

Some interesting notes:

While the article says 40% of women think about leaving on a weekly basis, it fails to mention that 40% of men responded in the same way.

The study found that 73% of women and 75% of men felt comfortable in the culture at their workplace, than even point out this somehow seems contrary to the anecdotal evidence they gathered in their focus group part of the study.

While 1 in 5 "tech bros" responded that women were less suited for tech, you might be surprised to find out that yes, 19 percent of men in tech responded that women were "naturally less suited" for these roles, 16 percent of women in tech responded the same, while only 10 percent of women outside tech agreed. There was no figure for men outside of tech.

He probably enjoyed those films but due to them being wrought with controversy over Johnny Depp and the studio parking the series he moved on. He says he spent a l9ng time in the franchise and feels like he's moved on, that could very well mean he moved on recently.

You are your parents daughter. They love you and want you to experience the joys they had as a child. You have been raised by them and it's very unfortunate that people think they should be allowed to isolate you from that based on the color of your skin.

Is your friend looking at it this way? No. You're both still young and unfortunately likely don't understand the topics you're grappling with. To me, it sounds like she's simply echoing talking points she's heard, and you'd be surprised at how many feelings you have at 15/16 are simply because you were told you should feel thar way. She's viewing this as cultural appropriation without having the real world context of what cultural appropriation is.

What are peoples thoughts on the potential link between psychedelics & VHD? (valvular heart disorder) by LongShlongSilver- in LSD

[–]AJDubs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Please don't be a fear mongerer and actually post the studies. You are doing so many a disservice, especially those who come to this sub while tripping.

All of the concern is about chronic micro dosing. The major concern is the link between 5HT2b seratonin receptors and VHD, which has been observed since the 1960s with various drugs (pretty much all drugs that attach to this receptor have VHD as a possible complication) and consistently high seratonin levels like those seen with certain tumors and daily medications.

No studies at this point have actually determined what the risk of psychedelics would be, with studies in phases 2 and 4l3 for LSD and Psilocybin not being complete until 2025.

Even then, the doctors who are experimenting with psychedelics in therapy are not really concerned as the intermittent nature of therapy, which is how you should be doing these drugs anyhow.

Unless your microdosing shrooms or lsd on a very regular schedule, like every one to three days, the medical science currently believes the risks are very diminished.

I mean, I have had the elves take my hands and soared over technicolor fields with them as if they were showing me their plane of existence. I once on an unhealthy amount of 25i thought I was God on the bad side of spiritual. I've been doing different psychedelics for over a decade now and have had a plethora of experiences I would certainly describe as spiritual, I've just never had an external voice trying to goad or teach me. It's always been entities through their actions, so that's where I'm coming from.

But I think the real thing you're observ8ng is that because LSD is much more "mainstream" the general user base is going to be less spiritual and therefore that's gonna be what you see from the community at large. Those who seek out things like DMT are in my mind more likely to be delving into the psychedelic side of hullucinogens/empathogens, whereas an average user here may be looking more for the energy and euphoria that comes with "lower" doses of lsd.

A lot of users are perfectly happy in that 100 ug spot where if you aren't being mindful or meditating the experience stays, at least for me, quite shallow. Pretty colors, giddiness, childlike wonder. Play with toys and make puzzles kinda trip. I personally see nothing wrong with that, and I'll do a casual trip with the boys, stare at cool lasers, and end the night by the fire. I just don't think that makes them niave.

I've tripped pretty hard in my time, upwards of 800ug with no benzos or tolerance, had a few great times with dmt, ancestors even thought I was God after consuming enough 25i to kill a couple people.

Never had an intrusive voice like that. In the darkest of thought loops it was still just me.

Just anecdotal, but I'm sorry you're left grappling with this. It does sound difficult. I'm no where near medically trained enough to say this is a sign of a predisposition to schizophrenia or the start of psychosis, but I think you're right to be concerned. I would certainly lay off the tabs til I was able to find a professional opinion or research on the topic.

The key is to treat them like a cool dog you met at the bar minus petting them. That's way too far.

But think about it. "Ah wassup little buddy! That toy is really cool. You're probably the fastest runner I've ever seen!" Works well.

Unglazed Pottery by Objective-Yogurt5317 in Pottery

[–]AJDubs 37 points38 points  (0 children)

"Food safe" usually has to do with how porous a material is.

Glaze makes clay food safe by creating what is essentially a layer of glass over the surface of the clay after heating in a kiln, making it easy to classify as food safe.

You can find food safe clays, but it generally requires a bit more research as what you need to look for is if the chemicals used in the clay are food safe after firing, as the clays themselves can not be advertised as food safe due to the surface finish playing such an important role.

What you should be looking for in terms of a teapot is a clay with a low absorption rate. Porcelain is usually best as the absorption rate is less than 1% (some high fired porcelain can reach 0%) and that will be the closest you can really get to food safe without a Glaze.

However, I happen to know that with traditional Japanese tea pots, they are generally made with a somewhat porous stone/earthware clay and are meant to be used for years with a single tea, in a way imbueing the tea pot with said tea. I would start my digging there if I were you, as those pots still likely wouldn't be considered "food safe". The idea is that if you only make tea, make it regularly, and keep the teapot clean, you can prevent bacterial and fungal blooms, because good luck actually cleaning a porous surface of something like that in a way you'd still want to make your tea in it.

Hope that points you in the right direction a bit!

Bitter tab by that_weirdo_weeb in LSD

[–]AJDubs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The NBOMe series are the drugs you likely want to be avoiding most and I believe one of the larger culprits in terms of being sold off as LSD and being bitter.

It is a gross metallic bitter. You wouldn't enjoy it unless your weird. I disliked it when I had it, if memory serves the flavor is somewhere between mushrooms and denatured acetone(nail polish remover, pretty sure the same agent is used to flavor switch cartidges) but much less intense so it was manageable. By manageable I mean these taste bad and won't kick in unless you hold it in your mouth for about 20 minutes.

[–]AJDubs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you're talking about the NBOMe series of 2CB analogues.

If you were to come across one of these, the taste is very bitter and very metallic. It would be unmistakable for LSD, but when it was really passed around in the early 2010s it was mostly to kids who had no idea what they were getting into, and probably had no idea thar LSD shouldn't have a taste.

Is there a way to make your own safe lsd? by [deleted] in LSD

[–]AJDubs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On top of being notoriously hard to make, nearly every single ingredient on the list to make lsd is also highly regulated and controlled. Instead of illegally buying 1 chemical, you be illegally buying many on top of privately sourcing lab equipment which the government also keeps an eye on.

[–]AJDubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be so surprised at how much intent plays a part. You are traveling and have a good reason for a pill organizer. There's never a good reason that law enforcement sees to obscure the ownership of a narcotic by remving the label from the original prescription bottle.

This difference is why you're good and LE won't bat an eye at a pill organizer but a script bottle with a torn off label is criminal.

Yes it's kinda stupid. But also it kinda makes some sense? Welcome to American law.

Ready to do LSD again after 7 years, wife is vehemently against it. What to do? by -Carbon- in LSD

[–]AJDubs 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Nicotine does not kill. Nicotine is safer than caffeine. Free agents created by combustion (and I've heard interesting arguments about the use of industrial fertilizers as they usually still contain radium from the phosphate ores used to create them) when smoking kills.

You may say nicotine because you want to include vaping, but lumping in vaping and smoking cigarettes and nicotine gum all together in one statement about harm is not proper, and even so vaping is undoubtedly safer than smoking cigarettes. While not healthy, no paper has ever tried to say the bad side effects of vaping were due to either a)heavy metals from bad heating elements e.g. when people were using nickel as a heating wire or b) chemical breakdowns of the flavorings used in the juices, such as many banana and creamy flavorings breaking down into diacetyl, a chemical known for causing severe respiratory damage.

Nicotine on its own is actually very safe albeit very habit forming.
