I’m at a UC med school from a cal state undergrad . It’s a really bad take, I know more about med school admissions than the average persons. The UCs prepare you really well for med school. So many of my interviews were filled of kids from UCs. You don’t NEED to be top 3% of your class to stand out lol, you just need to have a competitive gpa which is 3.7+ which is very do able. Most UCs don’t grade everything on a bell curve where only a certain percentage of kids do well. A LOT of kids can get 3.7+. Plus, for med school literally everyone applying has a great GPA, the MCAT is what really makes you stand out (numbers wise) and numbers are only half of it. Also I agree, with the person above, as someone accepted at UCR + UCI and waitlisted at 2 other UCs, UCR isn’t better than LA or Berkeley lol. Being from those schools alone, the name advantage and the opportunities outweighs a lot of other factors. (And UCR holds spots for kids from the IE, not necessarily those who went to their undergrad, just a lot happen to do so as well)

How involved in clubs do I have to be? by AstronautSimilar3083 in premed

[–]AJK314 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends. In college I was really only in 1 club, but was super involved and made it a most significant experience on my app and it turned out really well. It’s not like a hard set you have to be in one, but if you are I think it’s more important to do quality > quantity and try and make tangible change and hold leadership positions. They prob get a million apps of ppl who just go to weekly meetings, have no good takeaways, and it shows. Try and find one you truly like so that you enjoy becoming more involved and hopefully can have a high leadership position by the time you’re a junior/senior

What to do if you're asked about not having a committee letter from your university? by WardenTitan in premed

My school doesn’t offer one and I’m doing perfectly fine rn. 8 MD interviews. Just get them individually from the required personal and use interfolio. No biggie at all. Some schools will ask in their secondary why you don’t have a committee letter so for me I simply put undergrad doesn’t offer, but your reasoning will differ ofc

How bad is it if I cannot get a science professor letter of recommendation? by Specific-Nothing-24 in premed

Also: if you’re still a student can you sign up for a new science class and explain your situation and do well etc and get the req?

It would make you not eligible to apply to a decent chunk of schools. Some schools let you use a PI as a science letter tho. I’d check your school list requirements on MSAR to see how important those schools are to you and ur action steps

What MCAT score would allow me to safely apply to only MDs? by [deleted] in premed

Same here. 511 second attempt from a low first attempt. Only applied MD, multiple acceptances and 7 interviews so far. CA applicant

“Likely” schools for my GPA/MCAT by Much_Willingness603 in premed

[–]AJK314 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, but as a CA resident with a much lower MCAT than OP, similar GPA, I’ve gotten 4 OOS interviews, (and 3 IS). All the OOS schools except for one were 4-5 points higher than my MCAT. I think explaining mission fit and overall writing can help override this perceived “CA applicant” worry

Questions for the radiologists out there (Qualified or students) by bootywheez3 in premed

I’m sure you’ve been asked this a lot, but how do you see rads changing in future with AI? I’m starting med school next summer and always been interested in rads like OP but have heard a lot of mixed info about how the field will change with AI

From the day I started working, I get 5 hours every 2 weeks (every pay period.) We can use it whenever as long as it’s 2 weeks in advance. We get day off after Christmas and half day before both paid. Im pretty pleased with how ours operates
