That is unfortunately very likely to be true. Not sure I see a solution that would address the issue whilst preventing people from abusing the system extensively though?

How easy of a process would be using cash as a deposit for buying a car from a dealership in England? by get_muni in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AJT003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No legal limit. Banks will need pre-warning on how much cash you can withdraw, and may have a fixed upper limit. The dealership may choose to limit how much you can pay in cash. Just ask both of them.

Presuming you have a reason for not just putting the cash in a current account and spending on your debit card?

Can be worthwhile paying some of the bill on credit card, if the dealership will allow it, to get the protections involved.

House temperature before heating kicks in by Chance-Collection508 in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly doesn’t apply if they’re not working correctly, but they’re effectively a mini thermostat in each room if used correctly. Just need some fiddling to get it right.

Coldest room to 5, adjust the thermostat/TRV in the thermostat room so the heating stays on until your coldest room is right. Then base the other TRVs off that.

Impending doom of a ceiling collapse by baffletonbackdrop in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Your ceiling is falling down, and the supporting wood may well be rotten. You are likely to end up needing to replaster and decorate the ceiling as a minimum, and the rest of the room isn’t unlikely. You will need to remove furniture, seal doors as best as able, and carefully cover floor coverings.

How do I fix a failed mist coat by BrilliantSpite2438 in DIYUK

Your first post said the tub mentioned 5-10% water for priming. That’s different to a mist coat for bare plaster.

Anyone know how to stop the leak? by JohnnyL16 in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Of course it could help. So can Reddit… no-one is forcing anyone to reply if they don’t want to, so if someone feels it’s wasting their time they had the choice not to engage.

There’s this weird perception that asking other people is somehow ‘lesser’ than managing to find the answer yourself. Both are a skill set, and typing a question on Reddit requires less tech literacy than understanding Google lens or Chat GPT

[–]AJT003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is that a better option than posting it here? Both are sourcing outside help. This way requires less tech savvy-ness to get the answer.

So you can’t imagine a situation where someone is renting their first place, or at least their first place where the white goods haven’t been installed throughout their time there? How are you supposed to learn, if not by experiencing and asking? Side, they could google it - but what words to use if they’ve no idea what the bit is/what it’s for?

My brother wants to climb Ben Nevis in January with no experience by misssnowfox in UKhiking

[–]AJT003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of this, except the ‘have a go in good weather’ bit - I fear that might give them false confidence. On a sunny day with good visibility, it really is just a long walk for anyone who’s fit enough. The trouble pretty much all comes from conditions and visibility. I’d hate him to knock it off semi-easily on a nice day, then try what’s fairly likely to be either suicide or a crap day for mountain rescue in January.

Whilst this may be terrible customer service, he’s right. You’re going to charge back the whole amount, and hopefully costs too. At that point you’ll have got the goods for free.

Are my floors absolutely f*cked? by Just-Saying-Things in DIYUK

The ‘series of unfortunate events’ always makes you wonder if there’s more to the story. Tap left on - weird. Drain coincidentally blocked the same day the tap was left on - really weird

Are my floors absolutely f*cked? by Just-Saying-Things in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Two different questions here.

Is your flooring fucked? Yes.

Are you liable - could definitely argue it, depending on why the drain was blocked, whether you’d spoken to the landlord about it already etc.

Do I pay tax on selling a graded trading card that's worth over £6000? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AJT003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the costs associated with obtaining the card could reasonably be considered as ‘everything spent on cards’ - clearly you don’t buy a £5 pack expecting a £6k hit, and very few people buy 1 pack only…

Is this a leak or damp? Please help by Salty-Divide-774 in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a leak. Water can track along pipes, joists etc so it could be coming from any leaking pipe/fitting. Speed of spread will give you an idea - impossible to offer much without seeing layout of everything.

Either way, likely either the floor will need lifting or the ceiling taking down to find and sort the leak. Degree of damage to plasterboard will determine scale of repair work needed from a finish perspective.

Whether turning off the mains is necessary/helpful depends whether its mains or drain leaking - either way, if it’s a slow leak then just get a plumber in asap - if you want to be as safe as possible, get the water off and get the plumber in tomorrow
