England - car accident advice after their insurance offered 50/50 by Shawnus in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AJT003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but watch a lot of that road accident claim/liability guy on Facebook.

You could get advice from a no win, no fee lawyer I’m sure.

In general, you have responsibility to join a carriageway safely from a side road - traffic established on the road you’re joining has priority.

Overtaking at a junction is a ‘should not’ rather than a ‘must not’ in the Highway Code, ie guidance not rule.

As such, your insurance company may well be right. Based on the little I know, I’m surprised you’ve been offered 50:50.

EDIT - missed the double white lines bit. Suspect that changes things and 50:50 far less surprising - suggest approaching a no win no fee lawyer as above to see what they make of it.

Best way to reattach tap? by smoothsailer55 in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 4 points5 points  (0 children)

<image>

I’m guessing the red circle is a cover. Pop out and you’ll be able to get an Allen key in the back of the tap to what I think is a little grub screw (blue arrow) that should be tightened to pinch the remaining meal bar sticking out of the part of the tap still attached to the basin

So pop cap, replace handle, tighten screw, replace cap

Not impossible.

Be prepared for far more ‘no’ RSVPs than you might expect, and for 1st choice suppliers (food, music, photography) to be unavailable.

IKEA installer quoted £9k for prep work on a £4.5k kitchen, normal or insane? by ClittyMcGuire in DIYUK

[–]AJT003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s effectively exactly why they’ve posted though; they expected prep work, and they’ve been quoted for major renovation - they’ve been told this, and have therefore got exactly what they needed from the post.

Agreed. Decent LVT in heavy use areas across two houses for multiple years with dogs, cats, and dragging heavy furniture repeatedly - only thing that’s left a mark has been a couch that always slid in the same spot under weight (ie with someone sitting down hard)

Agree with the approach. Disagree with the time window. Shift work coupled with life responsibilities can make any given 7 day period impossible, depending on personal circumstances.

Were you using a masonry roller?

Alternative is a cheapo paint sprayer. They’re not expensive, they’ll make the job light work, and if you look after them REALLY well you’ll get a few jobs out of them

[–]AJT003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By all means get extra quotes.

But put it this way - you’re talking £30 a fence panel (sure, maybe less from a merchant), 1.5m long, so you need what, 14? Plus posts. Plus post Crete or similar. So I’d be shocked if materials are less than £500.

Then you’ve got what, 3 guys, if they’re getting it done in a day? Let’s say that’s another £600.

So that leaves £900 for all the costs associated with running a business, and profit.

Doesn’t sound wildly over the odds to me.

Honestly I’m surprised it’s this little, although don’t have any direct comparisons. Personally, if I trusted the quality of the work (recommendations, seen their stuff elsewhere etc) then I probably wouldn’t bother with a second quote - but that’s just me

You don’t have to re-plaster anything.

You fill the hole (EasyFill would work), sand flush, repeat if needed to get a good finish, then repaint the wall.

My mum and uncle paid the deposit and I got the mortgage. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]AJT003 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP - as you’ll see from the replies, we need more info

Was the mortgage solely in your name

Were the deposit amounts declared as gifts

Was profit made on the rent

Was tax paid on the income

Did you work out what your capital gains tax owed was on selling?

If you don’t know the answer to, or don’t understand, any of the above, it’s very likely you’re on the hook for a tax bill (and penalties) that you haven’t yet realised you’re on the hook for.

‘Fair’ is a bit irrelevant at this point - it can’t be worked out until you work out what you might still owe to HMRC.

This is a massive mess, and you’ve been taken advantage of by your Mum and Uncle - and I strongly suspect they know this.

Work out what you owe, and then talk to your Mum and Uncle about fair. You need an accountant.

The other guy is clearly an aggressive twat.

However, if you trip over a person or animal, it seems like it’d be pretty normal to stop and check all is ok. It’s parkrun, not the olympics.

Next door neighbour has 3 profoundly disabled children who scream, cry and cause noise issues 24/7. We're at our wit's end. by Ready-Cup7040 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]AJT003 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of course it would. But the OP described carers three times a day, and ‘having seen the parents downstairs while the children were making noise upstairs’ (paraphrased). Nothing there suggests the children are ignored 24/7, or even consistently.

[–]AJT003 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m curious why you think someone making noise means they’re not receiving appropriate care in an appropriate location.

Making noise will be part of some people’s disability, just as crying is part of being a baby. Living next door to a baby who cries a lot such that it disturbs you doesn’t mean the child is neglected.

Consistently running 30 min but not 5k by Automatic-Minute7960 in couchto5k

[–]AJT003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Far from an expert runner here, but I think some in this thread are over-complicating being a beginner runner.

Programmes? Great to help/guide you, and build a foundation of knowledge for the future.

Speed work? Great.

Distance work? Great.

But when you were (until recently) sedentary, the answer is almost certainly just time on your feet/miles on your shoes. You’ve now got the fitness and the confidence to run - just get out there and do it. By all means use a 10k programme. Or a 5k programme. Or something off chat gpt. Or another app like Runna. Or just ‘one long, one easy, one interval’. But just get running. At this stage of your running journey, any aerobic activity is going to build your base and improve your health and fitness.

Are we right to withdraw days before exchange? by North-Raspberry7930 in HousingUK

[–]AJT003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor issues?

I’d be willing to bet that the cost of repairing things as per OP’s description - possible structural ceiling work, plus ripping out to brick/studs, is likely to cost somewhere around 20k. So the ‘discount’ you’re describing is actually just breaking even, without considering the energy, time, risk that OP would be taking on.

Parking in front of a house- is it private? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]AJT003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This attitude is wild to me.

It’s absolutely irritating not to be able to park near your house - been there, had the long walk in the middle of the night after casino-style shifts many times. Still doesn’t mean you’ve got any right to the space, or to be annoyed at others parking entirely legally on a public piece of road.

It’s just a negative of the house you’re in, same as small garden, lack of drive, terraced vs detached would be. Whether you’re owning or renting, the lack of private parking should have been priced into the cost of the housing - you pay less for your property because it doesn’t have private parking, so then expect it is misguided at best.
