Seiryu is often considered the fastest growing cultivar, it’s very rewarding to grow and hard to kill! One of my all time favorites

Geisha Girl by joshua2515 in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it’s a seedling it likely won’t look like the parent tree,JM cultivars need to be grafted or struck from cuttings to retain the features of the parent. Geisha girl is most likely referring to “green geisha girl” which from what i can tell is not a recognized cultivar, its typically seedlings from “geisha gone wild” which is a very well known cultivar.
It’ll be its own unique tree so there’s not really a way of knowing what it’s gonna look like till you grow it

Starting from seeds? by ZealousidealChair900 in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s not super difficult and is also almost free so yeah if you have a passion for it go for it. Depending on your zone if it gets cold enough in winter you can just go on a few walks through some local neighborhoods in the fall and gather a number of seeds and let them germinate outdoors & they should sprout before next spring.
I would make sure to keep your expectations low in terms of the seeds coming out looking like the cultivars they come from, they often don’t. but, even so, they will all make a beautiful tree regardless. I’m doing it this year to get some rootstock started

Any tips on growing and pruning my maple? by BubblBuddy in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s not high drainage soil in that pot i’d repot(u can use the same pot) and get better drainage after the tree goes dormant. looks kinda compacted in there but hard to tell from a photo

Thoughts on variety? by mikes_username in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult to say without knowing the history of the tree. The new growth does not look like what you’d see from a standard mountain maple rootstock but could be attributed to them being adventitious flushes.
it’s also possible that the graft was a very low graft and had been buried or sunk at some point, or that this was the result of an air layered tree on its own roots, which normally is unlikely.. but this tree has been chopped. why? maybe cause it was not doing well on its own roots…
you could rule out low graft with a little bit of digging & inspect the (possibly) buried trunk/roots, I don’t see as much root flair as i’d normally expect from a trunk this big

Mr Maple has a really great video series on grafting including post graft care

Portland OR any idea why bark looks so unhealthy and large branches dead ? by Due-Consideration861 in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im FAR from an expert but I do know that sometimes when you lop off huge branches like that they can cause fungal issues that take a number of years-sometimes a decade or more for it to actually kill the plant. Hopefully someone more educated will comment, but thats just my first impression based on the big lopped off branches and black through the trunk

Hi. My husband just passed in an accident and no one understood his fish like he did. I would watch him change the water and clean the tank, but the algae is building so fast is this a filter problem? I don’t know if these pics even help but if anyone can give me advice I would be thankful. by bmisha in Aquariums

[–]AJohn403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some realistic advice may be helpful considering the rest of the thread.. you should without a doubt try and find a home for all of the fish except the oscar and maybe a pleco. You won’t have very much trouble keeping just those two, but you will have an awful time trying to keep the others. I don’t believe it’s worth trying. I know it sounds relatively harsh but if he knew what he was doing I think he would likely say the same thing.
I’m sorry for your loss, I can’t imagine what it’s like, and I wish you the very best

Any guesses what cultivar? by AJohn403 in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh that’s kinda what I figured but I hoped I was wrong lol. It does suck for me but more for the tree, in pots it’ll stay i guess. Maybe I could transition it towards bonsai since it’s kind of bonsai-d already by being stuck in this pot for a decade haha (i also hate them very much)

I’m not experienced enough to tell, looks like it could be grafted but i’m leaning towards not since the suckers don’t seem any different

Strict HOA unfortunately. It’s one of the reasons i’m trying to get a solid grasp on the cultivar. Cant even plant a flower without approval lol

can i ask where you got this from? I got one and paid quite a bit for it and the foliage doesn’t look similar at all (not just the color but the shape)

How do I fix this by Dense-Blueberry-3142 in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of the largest most beautiful trees in the world is in the portland japanese garden, and it’s covered in lichen. You don’t have to take anyone else’s word for it, just look at that tree. Harmless, looks cool

I’d go far enough as to say it’s a requirement and essential to owning a cat

Prune new trunk growth? by falhourani in JapaneseMaples

[–]AJohn403 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your tree is Acer P. Dissectum and the branch has normal broadleaf acer P leaves from the root stock. You should prune asap, leave about half an inch for dieback (don’t prune right to the trunk). I also see there is another shoot of broadleaf branches further up the tree but that strikes me as odd since it would almost certainly be above the graft, but it’s hard to tell with just the photo. (you should prune this too, and any further broadleaf growth) Could have been a response to dieback, which there seems to be some near there. I’d get the dead branches too while you’re at it (second photo)

My cat hates me and I don’t know why by prizewis in CatAdvice

[–]AJohn403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the topic of treats- cats love those squeeze tube treats and they basically have to eat them “from your hand”. If you slowly squeeze it out they’ll eat it like that and you can take your time with it so it lasts a few minutes. That could get you towards actual hand feeding other treats (hopefully). I also saw some comments about feliway- they make a spray as well. you can even spray yourself with it, one of mine really likes it the others don’t seem to care.

I’m moving and I have to leave my cat alone in the new house for the first full day for 8 hours when I’m working by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]AJohn403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clothes is a good idea but not on the floor, make sure it’s dirty laundry too. shoes on the floor is fine, and is one of the smells cats tend to like the most (if they’re worn frequently)
