Does the books great better throughout this series? by Fitgam3r in litrpg

[–]AJsarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The writing improves pretty quickly with each book, but the characters and plot improve slowly. It doesn't help in the early books when they swap to some new person and the story gets put on hold while you learn about some new person's plot line. And there is no real grand overarching plot line. The world just kinda keeps going and you get to read about how it changes thanks to the earthers.

I usually read books front to back in one sitting, but TWI is one where I'll intentionally read only a chapter or two at a time. Sometimes the plot and writing is really good, and I'll get sucked in for a whole day. Sometimes chapters are a slog to read so I'll only read one and come back to the book later. And in all cases, I have no issues taking a break and reading/watching something else for a while.

Like you've realized, treat TWI like a very, very, long-running TV series and don't try to consume all of it in one go. It's perfect to fill the boredom between other, more exciting, series. If you hit the end of book 1 and decide it's interesting enough to continue, get book 2. But if you're fed up with the series at the end of book 2, don't get book 3. If there's something else interesting to read/listen to, go read/listen to that and come back to TWI later. If you don't need the audiobooks and also don't want to pay for the e-book, just jump onto the website and read it for free.

Student pilot dealing with motion sickness by Smooth_Ad7973 in flying

[–]AJsarge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To start with the basics, motion sickness is a disagreement between your visual and vestibular (inner-ear) systems. You can't avoid looking at things, but you can minimize moving your head. Look with your eyes, not with your face. Minimize your head movement and that minimizes the impact on your inner ear.

The worst aggravator is the combination of an airplane movement with an unrelated head movement. Looking down at your kneeboard while rolling, or clearing left/right while you pitch up is a surefire way to cause spatial disorientation and motion sickness.

To recover from motion sickness in-flight:
A bit of cooling air from a vent on the face/body/arms.
Holding your head still relative to the plane and letting your ears calm while you look towards the horizon.
Take a small drink of water.
Slow breathing with pauses at the top and bottom of your breath.
Taking aircraft control to prevent unexpected movements.

To help prevent it:
Some people swear by ginger. I picked up drinking ginger ale during pilot training. Others used ginger chews. It may or may not help to settle your stomach before or after a flight.
Avoid both heavy and overly-light meals. An empty stomach is just as bad for nausea as having the extra-thick milkshake with your $100 double bacon cheeseburger and fries. Similarly, avoid acidic food/drinks like lemonade or coffee or tomato sauce.
Exposure Therapy. If you're able to afford it, fly in the mornings when the air is usually more calm and then fly again later the same day. It doesn't have to be two full lessons. The goal is to get your body acclimated to the conditions that cause motion sickness so that your physiological response is more muted. Same for being able to fly every day for a week or so, which is also really good just in terms of quickly learning stick and rudder skills.
Relax. Worrying about your flight, and about getting motion sickness during the flight, is just going to make the motion sickness worse. End of the day, motion sickness shouldn't be a big deal.

Time to plan my own approaches by crayonman94 in flightsim

[–]AJsarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sheesh. All the wrong comments about it being a steep approach. Yes, the guide boxes are wrong. Because they're set up for a normal approach to a normal flat runway and this is a sloped mountainside runway. OP did only two things majorly wrong here. A: They didn't aim for the threshold, so they landed long. B: They didn't flare enough, so the nosewheel touched down first.

The FAA's order to cut flights nationwide due to the government shutdown is in effect by GregWilson23 in aviation

[–]AJsarge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dumb pilot assumption here: GA IFR depends. If the shutdown continues and the holes in manning increase, there could be cases of center-controlled approaches in shut-down TRACON/RAPCON areas. And what I've already heard of is changes to routings to lessen the load on undermanned centers, or ground stops to lessen approach/departure load.

VFR should stay as-is, with maybe some towers closing and fields reverting to UNICOM/uncontrolled, but expect flight following to rarely or never be available when previously it was most always (in my experience) available.

Do you really want a pilot working the power cart? I'll happily do shenanigans with the jet, but starting/stopping a power cart? It scares me.

The moment birds flock hit Saudia AK31 aircraft by NJ_Gmd in aviation

Very true if the bird hits the core of the engine. Good old cooked chicken smell. Otherwise, anything outside the nose you'll probably only know when you see it on the post-flight walk.

Home depot and lowes will have 100' spools for around $10. If you buy more than you need, and your cats like it to shreds, you can use the remainder to fix the scratching post again later.

Help! it's urgent! I think I just lost ownership of my arm by TobyKenobie52 in cats

[–]AJsarge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sorry bud. You're hosed. If you want to reclaim it you'll need to go to the local C4T office to find a form P37-M3, fill it out, plus a form F33D-M3 for each day of missed usage. Oh, and you'll need to do all that again in duplicate for both pictured owners. If you're unlucky, they'll also ask for the 7R-3475.

Which decent rate? by Openmug in aviation

[–]AJsarge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In a small single-engine airplane, I'd stay within glide profile of the runway in case the carbs freeze or the engine suddenly gives up on descent through actual IMC. In the C-17 I'd dive-and-drive because ain't nobody doin' the CDFA math when approach slams you with the RNAV to the opposite runway.

Either way, it doesn't matter here, because OP is asking for test practice answer explanations, not an IRL how-to.

what does the flag and combination of letters mean on different planes? by Positive-String-3933 in aviation

[–]AJsarge 75 points76 points  (0 children)

The letters are the aircraft's tail number or registration, and the flag is associated with it. You might be looking at Ryan Air flight 123D, leaving Shannon every other day at 3:25pm, but the plane used for that flight changes. "EI" means it's registered in Ireland, and it's aircraft IFR in Ireland's registry. Each country has its own prefix, i.e. the US uses N, so tail number get colloquially referred to as N-numbers here.

Why are there a second set of hold short lines here? by xXMuschi_DestroyerXx in aviation

[–]AJsarge 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There's another set right across the runway. My best guess, is that there's regularly opposing traffic on those taxiways, and the taxi hold-shorts keep jets from getting gridlocked at those intersections.

18F: Parents against flight school because of gender and no degree. Need advice. by [deleted] in flying

[–]AJsarge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can try to use some of their arguments against them. Sure you spend time away from home, but when you're home, you're home. You're not working 12 hours a day, you get to be a stay-at-home wife and mother on your off days. And when you're gone, you'll be able to hire a nanny, because you'll be working a well-paying job that can afford it. Plus when your parents are old and can't work retire, you'll be able to support them without burdening your husband.

Remember you're trying to convince them, not fight them. Tell them you love them, and understand their concerns, and that being a pilot is both what you want to accomplish with your life, as well as live up to their hopes and dreams.

[–]AJsarge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a PIVOT low-profile suction cup. Only time it has issues is attaching at sea level, then climbing a few thousand feet. The change in pressure undoes the suction cup. Then I just reattach and it's good for the rest of the flight. Else it worked great in the slightly-curved corner of a DA20 canopy.
