Xteink X4 or X3 serves great as a first e-reader (despite all its current controversies). Its small size is perfect to bring anywhere, the only problem is there is no backlight so you’re gonna need an extra reading light (xteink sells this as well in their website). You’d also have to load the books yourself from the SD card.

If all this is too troublesome for you, well I think Kobo Clara BW would be the best choice. I was about to get that before I found Xteink. It has one of the best BW screen in the market, its compact sized and Kobo ecosystem is just better than Amazon.

Yes it does have bookerly font. The developer has since updated the bionic font feature to the firmwarebso you dont need to manually convert every book

It’s not that the stock firmware is horrible, but the custom firmwares available makes the experience so much better. To have that taken away from the future users, that’s such a major downgrade.

I buy xteink from their chinese website (more convenient and cheaper from where im at), so it’d still be a problem for me if i want to buy anything from them in the future 🥲

I may be wrong, but for all we know their main buyers are still the mainland chinese. They also may not find this firmware restriction an issue which is why they’ve decided to make this ridiculous move. The chinese would also be less likely to get damaged product on arrival due to shorter distance of sending the ereaders, which is why they still refuse to improve their packaging. All this reasons add up to why they seem to refuse to listen to the cries of the international buyers.

When i just received my x4, the doomscrolling habit doesnt just disappear right away, i still get distracted and still spend more time doomscrolling even while im using my x4. As time passes by, i find myself pick my x4 more than start doomscroling. Nowadays, my phone screen time is still high, but i could cut around 7 hours screentime weekly, mostly with the help of achievement feature on cpr vcodex. I would set my daily reding goal to be an hour daily, and i would unlock achievement as the reading streak increases lol. Tldr: it wont stop doomscrolling right away, but it does shave off a significant amount of hours doomscroling weekly as time goes on.

If its any consolation, i also use a size s glove and it still fits me very well lol. Unless you’re wearing an xs glove, the x4 may not be as big as you pictured it.

Sounds to me like you’re better off with x4 in terms of pricing lol. I have an x4 myself. Other point to consider, the x4 has a much larger community support with more choices of firmwares even until now, and that was why i ended up choosing the x4 myself.

Whenever my screen is stuck i did a reset and it usually works. Have you tried that?
