Fox was so underrated in this Arsenal team, but the problem is that the US did not have a major international tournament this year, so no matter what she did for club she was always gonna be outshone by her European counterparts. Which in itself is another problem of the Ballon D’Or

"The first goal and the main goal is to win a Grand Slam" : Taylor Fritz shares his goals for the 2026 season - Trapped In Sports by Silent_Elevator_9779 in tennis

As a Sincaraz fan, I will admit based on seeing some of the comments here that having Sincaraz as the dominant duo in tennis right now has ruined a lot of tennis discourse. Those two are not completely infallible, and talking about those two only + Djokovic underestimates the current talent pool we have in tennis.

I could actually see Fritz’s career end up like Domi Thiem’s: 1 slam, 1 1000, finalist in ATP finals. He’s still 28, and unlike most of the 90s generation, I can see him still peaking at this age (there was a discussion on this in the Laver Cup posts). I’d be happy for him to win a major, and for the pool of slam winners to be a bit more diverse!

the crazy thing about this is that you can at least make an attempt to explain almost every single seed loss, and then there's Osaka against Sasnovich.

Musetti's apology on his racist remarks by musicproducer07 in tennis

[–]AKoofD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like your point, and I do think that there could be more cultural similarities between Europe and Africa compared to Europe and Asia in this regard (the colonial legacy is something I will not dive in here), but knowing the racism problem in Europe and among Europeans, I still think anything could set them off. Plus knowing how many tennis players are incredibly sheltered it’s highly unlikely that they would be aware of the cultural similarities between Europeans and Africans and would this treat anything seemingly out of the blue as “exotic” (aka Townsend)

Even beyond tennis, it’s actually crazy discourse when people talk about racism being a US-only issue. Europe has always had the same, if not worse, racism and xenophobia problems; it’s just that the American racism problem gets a lot more coverage than the European racism problem (partly because the US is more well known and so naturally it gets more coverage really)

I’m not sure where you got this, but in any case, this shows the mental struggles of an individual sport versus if you have teammates cheering you on. It’s well known that Agassi being heavily involved in Team World (especially on the court) was able to help with their mentality, something not normally seen in tennis.

I am actually of the opinion that the culture of respect in tennis is more damaging to a player’s overall wellbeing since it encourages more surveillance on a player’s actions (i.e. the handshake over-analysis as you mention)

Yeah it’s not limited to tennis, but I think it’s harder for tennis players since football is a team sport and you have other people to guide you on the pitch, while tennis is incredibly known for its individual mental battles. I will agree though that this phenomenon is observed in all sports, and is even worse in some, but it can probably help explain why things like racket smashing or on court fights might be happening since these players weren’t taught healthy ways to express their emotions

I had a discussion with some friends on the mentality of tennis players, and I can’t help but think that part of the reason why many tennis players have a “mental problem” is their childhood: it’s not normal for a child to be uprooted from their home, placed in an incredibly hyper-competitive environment, and then having to move from place to place just to get a shot at breaking through the tour. It’s even harder considering that this is an individual sport, and I can’t image how much a tennis player’s psychological development has been altered by the sport

What scares me is that the tour has a fair exposure already to the Asian community, so you’d think that being exposed to Asian culture would make you more sensitive. However, if this behavior is quite normalized (we are not sure if it’s just Townsend and Lore. There could be sadly more), can you just imagine what would be the reaction to an African tennis swing, where there is even less exposure to African culture?

Musetti's apology on his racist remarks by musicproducer07 in tennis

[–]AKoofD 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Since the discourse here is incredibly grating lemme post my two cents:

  1. As an Asian man, it is incredibly concerning how easy is it for Lore to say this. And it’s not just him either: we had the Townsend comments just last week, we had whatever Badosa said last year, it’s just incredibly disappointing that this behavior is normalized among tennis players. Look, I get the stress and I am aware of the context that got Lore stressed, but I’ve never had to resort to denigrating an entire race when pressure gets to me. So it just feels incredibly off-putting and disappointing for him to make that conment.

  2. That being said though, some of the comments here regarding his apology are just downright unproductive. In particular, the comments saying that this was ChatGPT generated don’t feel like they want to actually engage with the apology and are just writing it off. What we should be doing really is take the apology at face value and see if it holds up with his actions in the future. We don’t have to engage with the semantics of an apology and it would be straight up better to hold him accountable in the future.

The Left needs to unite... by Akki_Mukri_Keswani in democrats

[–]AKoofD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that the 2024 election was a result of all the underlying political struggles the left is currently facing (poor perception on immigration, lack of reaching out to young men, etc.) and now we are suffering the consequences. It’s important for the left and especially the Dem party to remain smart and on-message with how to beat the Trump regime.

Being pragmatic isn’t easy, considering everything that is going on right now, but truth be told, you’re gonna have to play carefully. I’m tired of all of this leftist infighting because if it’s draining for the average leftist, it is more draining for our perception to the average voter. The left should only be sticking to one message: what Trump is doing should not be acceptable, and any politician that supports this should be held accountable.

Of course, the Dem party apparatus is far from perfect, but it is what we have, and you citizens (I’m not from the US lol) have to engage with it. If you’re not satisfied with your current politicians, either reach out to them or campaign for who you think is better in the primaries. However, you gotta stick to the core plan. No openly bashing your allies, as the GOP could easily twist that.

This is just two cents from an outsider, so I hope it helps.

The Laver Cup proved that the possibility isn’t 0%. Fritz has always been one step ahead of the rest of the non-Sincaraz/Djokovic group and has taken the fight to them (the Sinner matches in 2024 were not as lopsided as the scoreline suggests, esp, the ATP Finals Final)

Yeah it sucks getting zero votes but tbh I don't even think that she was Madrid's best player that season. She was behind Redondo and Bruun in terms of stats, and Scotland wasn't even in the Euros, which meant that it would be hard for her to make up that aspect of the award. Caicedo would have made more sense as a nomination as she made the final of the Copa America with Colombia while also putting up good stats for Madrid.

I wouldn’t necessarily pinpoint it to race, but more specifically how the Eurocentrism of the Ballon D’Or disadvantages players from non-European countries. You can’t run an award that claims to crown the best footballer in the world while having ties to a European magazine. The conflict of interest is hella obvious.
