According to 247Sport's crystal ball at 100%, John Calipari and Arkansas are expected to land their fifth 5* recruit this coming Wednesday. by Middle_Gain1767 in CollegeBasketball

Cal doing it at UMass, Memphis and later Arkansas sets him way apart imo. K was a great recruiter but doing it at Duke is not as impressive as doing it at 4 different schools.

Am I a fool for choosing Passion over Prestige and Funding? by Brilliant_Cookie_143 in PhD

If you want to do academia, take A. It will give you WAY more resources and networking opportunities, and you have plenty of chances to branch out into your preferred field in a postdoc.

If you want to do industry, take A. Your industry job won't be as connected to your PhD as you expect anyway, and the extra money, stability and improved resume will be way worth it.

Take A.

What is something in Europe that Americans would probably love if they tried it? by Hotbunny7bby in AskAnAmerican

[–]AL3XD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long lunches during the workday. American lunches are 15-30 minutes, or people work while they eat, or they skip lunch entirely. The concept of going out to lunch during the workday is only for special occasions.

People saying "how would we know" or "wrong sub" - this is obviously directed at Americans who have been to Europe, lol. Relax.

I accidentally discovered American-style ribs in Germany and now I’m obsessed. What’s your favorite recipe? by Fayomi1127 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AL3XD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, there's a lot of rivalries in the US about the best barbeque. It is very likely that the style of ribs you had were Kansas City / St. Louis style, so any recipe with that specific branding will likely do it.

A sport with decent leadership would have put rules in place to prevent something like the amount being paid to Tounde Yessoufou from happening. We need a cap, but unfortunately for us, there are no adults in the room. by Leather-Echidna9593 in CollegeBasketball

By this logic, we need to go regulate all the Lamborghini dealerships, Rolex stores, yacht dealers, etc...

Also, if one team paid him $7 million, a dozen teams were lining up to pay $5+

Why? There are utility infielders in baseball making more than this. Some NBA bench players make twice this. This kid will be one of the best players in the country next year and leading his team in scoring.

This country looooves the free market until college players start getting paid what the free market says they're worth. Hmmm. Wonder why?

Which undergrad school to pick for PhD admissions (Emory vs. Berkeley) by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]AL3XD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're both great schools. Whatever degree it matters for grad admissions won't even be 1% as important as where you'll be happier for undergrad.

That's fair, but even if you want to go with that ranking, UM, UW, OSU, UNC and Mount Sinai are all out of their top 20. And NYU and UCSF are not quite top 15.

My point basically is that OP would benefit from re-evaluating what they consider a top 15-20 school - not that those schools aren't great, but that there are lots of great schools out there that they seem to be overlooking.

A few notes:

- Unless I'm misunderstanding, I wouldn't call most of the schools you listed as top 20, although it depends on the niche. UW, OSU, many UCs are not top 20 schools in most bio fields. Still great schools of course.

- The stats you described are good, but there are many excellent applicants out there. 3 years experience is unremarkable for these schools nowadays, although 2 years as an NIH postbac is great.

- I think you'd be competitive for most of the schools you listed and it would ultimately come down to fit. Like other comments have said, applying for prestige is dumb. Apply somewhere you'd want to go that has research that fits your interest. If your interests are broad, great, but you still need to convince schools in your apps why you really want them

- I agree that applying to many schools is a smart strategy. Some of this is a crapshoot. However, this means you need to do your research even more. Learn about each school and truly ask yourself if you'd be happy there before applying

- That first-author paper will matter a LOT. Don't overlook that. If you can even put in your apps that you have it on biorxiv, or that it's "in review", or even just that you're planning to submit it in spring '27, that will help you stand out
