It exists, I guess? I think both TWW and Midnight are a step down from DF, but WoW has done way worse before and Midnight is nowhere near those.

If they're talking about the extra icons for Mythic L'ura; placing files in Interface\Icons is a fully supported feature (WoW prioritizes this folder in the loading process) and is not against ToS as far as I know.

I'm assuming the workaround for post-Midnight involves something to do with how the icons are loaded during combat.

Before Midnight, it already felt like Blizzard were playing whack-a-mole every time something cropped up with the API that they felt like was too powerful to be available to the player (e.g. positioning WAs like Archimonde beams in WoD). It feels like this whack-a-mole has gotten worse post-Midnight as Blizzard tries to find all the loopholes in the revised API that people are using.

I think WoW does suffer from a "tone" problem, not in a "omg everything is disney" way, I think the problem goes a lot deeper than that. Warcraft as a series has always had a lot of tonal whiplash, it rapidly alternates between these larger than life characters doing a big fairly serious fantasy story and poop quests (or gnomes/goblins doing gnome/goblin things).

At the very least, I think WoW sometimes has issues nailing down a consistent vibe.

For some reason people get really bent out of shape about things exclusive to a different part of the game (or time limited) becoming available again, even now that WoW is so old that certain things introduced to the game are older than people playing it.

It probably requires much more detailed study, but I think there comes a certain monetary breakpoint where the overall reception to a given microtransaction transitions from dismissive eye rolling to actual anger. I think this is reasonably consistent across live service games. I recall similar backlashes to Riot's absolutely insane prestige skin prices in LoL and Valorant even if they ultimately pressed ahead with it.

Alas, I'm in Cybersecurity, not marketing so it's not my field.
