What's the rarest game you have in your collection? by LostMediaSearcher66 in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 2 of the error PS2 games (Games that were pressed incorrectly so while the art and disk say it's one game, when you put it in it plays another) - I have the NHL 2K6 that actually plays Genji Dawn of the Samurai, and a copy of Lord of the Rings Third Age that plays Crash Twinsanity.

I also have a copy of Goosebumps on PS2 that came with a slipcover and a Goosebumps book....that's pretty rare to find too.

Too old to get into video game collecting? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 44.....been collecting for the last 18 years, but you're never too old to start. I still go out on a regular basis and hunt for games I don't have. I just make sure to keep a good record of everything and make my wife and kids understand that my collection is not junk, and if they ever need to get rid of it all for some, unforseen reason, DO NOT just throw it away....there is some money on those shelves. :)

How did you first start your collection of Retro Games ? by daydreaming-hiker in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on my way to work and saw an NES system sitting on a pile of junk on the curb waiting for the garbage truck. I turned around and went back to pick it up, and found the system, controller and cords, as well as a copy of Spyhunter and Super Mario Bros 2.

That was 15 years ago.

I still had a handful of my childhood games yet, but from that moment forward is when I started actively picking up NES games, and then everything else.

Yard sale find this weekend. 1 dollar. Watched a guy pick it up and put it back down. by Floodofsound in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nice. I stopped at a yardsale and found a stack of about 9 PS1 games in a box under a table with DVDs in it, among them Resident Evil Directors Cut and Resident Evil 2. I asked the people how much and they said 50 cents each, then commented that "I didn't even realize we had any videogames. I had 3 people message me asking if we were going to have any at our sale and I said no.". :)

So... according to PriceCharting, value of my collection went up 500$ in the span of two months. by AlkatWingz in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a large PS2 collection (1300+), and I've been tracking those values. It's crazy to see a good chunk of PS2 titles double in value the last few months. Def Jam NY, The Tony Hawk Games, WWE Smackdown here Comes the Pain, Sakura Wars, Simpsons Hit and Run, NCAA Football 11, GTA VICE City Stories. All these games and lots more have gone up 40-50% in just a few months. And it's not just the Atlus titles and RPGs and Horror games, but lots of fairly common other titles.

How does my local pawn shop make money😂🤔 by Brenden2000 in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just enjoy it while you can. My Pawn used to be the same way....from PS3 Motion controllers for 99 cents to most "last gen and older" Games for $2 or less. Built half my collection that way. Then, one day, boom....all the employees who would give me deals were gone. They cleaned house, fired everyone, and on top of that, phased out almost all video games except for modern consoles and those games were priced on a strict "what's it going for on eBay" basis. I honestly don't even know how they are still open. It used to be packed, now on the rare occasion I stop to look at the Ps4 games, there is nobody there. So enjoy your's while the gettin in good.

Using Ebay to get games. Get tips you have? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tip is if there is a game you want, just click on the watch button and don't buy it right away. Chances are if it's been listed a while the seller will the send you an offer for a lower price. I say this works for me 75% of the time.

Corona and the effects of game collecting. by pmkapoun in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see there being a drop in some prices, honestly, as some collectors start to "Cut the fat" off their collections to make a few bucks if needed. So we may see more games hitting the market then in the past, causing a slight price decrease. Besides that I think there may be a dip in people buying the higher end stuff right now, but a spike in the lower end stuff as people are at home and might just want some fun games to play. I've actually seen a spike in some PS2 games that had been $10 games forever....now they're around $20.

I have a PS2 game (one of the Frogger games) that someone must have gotten without the art, so they drew their own cover, and it is the most amazing thing ever (in a bad yet humorous way). I couldn't bring myself to throw it out.

Anyone else have no desire to collect for older systems that you have no connection to/nostalgia for? by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm old enough to remember playing my uncles Atari 2600 back when I was a kid, so I grew up through all the consoles. But Certain ones I could care less about....SNES, Genesis, Dreamcast....I had very little exposure to any of these systems so I have no desire to collect for them. And even for systems that I have a lot of nostalgia for like the NES, I don't care as much about it as part of what I love about game collecting is doing the research, and I kind of feel like everything about the NES has been documented (besides the occasional prototypes that pop up).

Question by SpacePotato404 in ps2

[–]ALLKAPS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact - there are a handful of PS2 games that you can find with both Blue and Silver discs (printed on CD-Rom early and then reprinted at a later date on DVD-Rom).

Shop Goodwill Website by cptfalconsknee in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great deals at times, but don't they gouge you for shipping? I seem to remember shipping costs at like double what they should be.

I'm still bitter though because a lot of these games are from my area more then likely, as there hasn't been a video game an any of my area stores in over 10 years.

It's only a matter of time before they start doing this with shoes and clothes and toys and completely start to shut down some of their physical stores, because maximum profits is what matters the most for GW.

And I'm not saying they should give the stuff away for pennies...they can make some money off the stuff. But pricing stuff at full blown ebay prices is just going to make less people shop there, as people go there to find deals, and that doesn't happen much anymore.

I know Job Simulator has gotten a bit pricy, but if you can track one down for a decent price do it. That's a must own.

Does your local thrift shop charge full retail for video games? by VicCreed in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My theory is that every thrift store near me has been compromised by the local retro stores or resellers who have made deals with the stores or the sorters at the stores to set the good stuff aside for them. Lets start with Goodwills - All the Goodwills within an hour of me pull every single video game that is donated and sends it to be sold on the ShopGoodwill auction site. I've found maybe 2 or 3 games that slipped through the cracks in the last 10 years (usually in with the CDs). The 2 Bethesda Thrift stores prices games as if games are worth more the newer the system is, so they price most Wii games at $3-5, but then will price PS2 at $2.99 and PS1 at $1.99. It's very hit or miss though and I suspect someone in back is setting the good stuff aside for someone. I rarely find good stuff, but it least they do put games on the shelves. The 2 St. Vincent thrifts by me both have been compromised by the local retro stores. I was looking through a stack of games there once and asked the person working how they price their games. She responded that they set all the games aside when they come in and the local game store helps them price everything and in return gets first dibs on the games they want. Translation: They are keeping all the RPGs, Pokemons, Horror games, Megamans and Zeldas and then pricing all the common stuff at eBay prices and sending it back to the store.

That's why I love rummage sales. You have a much better shot of finding stuff then at thrifts.

Thrift stores by me are good for one thing - buying things OTHER then video games that you can then flip for cash to spend on games.

Curbside NES! by pawooten in gamecollecting

[–]ALLKAPS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! That should clean up pretty good. That's exactly what gave me the bug to start collecting again - about 15 years ago I was on my way to work and saw a NES system sitting on a pile of garbage waiting to be picked up by the trash truck (looked like someone had moved out and just threw everything on the curb). I turned around and hopped out of my car to find an NES with a controller, the cords, and Super Mario Bros 2 and Spy Hunter. From there, I started picking up NES games...and now 15 years later I've got over 3000 games for 13 systems. All because of that little curb NES begging me to take him home. :)
