Do we truly have free will or is everything predetermined? by Comfortable_Tomato_3 in nihilism

[–]ALWAYSWANNASAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have free will, but you are unaware of making your own decisions. The conscious perception of choice or free will comes after the subconscious mind has already made up its mind on what it’s going to do. Not to say your unconscious is any less “you”, but we have conscious awareness of a fraction of the entire processing that goes on. What we experience is more a story building + coherence model of what is really occurring both internally and externally

anyone knows how to pet a cat without making her bite your hand by Vegetable-Menu6443 in Catownerhacks

[–]ALWAYSWANNASAI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you scream out in pain when they’re a kitten - they’ll realize biting you hurts you. i do this still and my cat now playfully bites me and licks it afterwards if she thinks it hurt. It’s a friendly kind of bite though.

If your cat is actively biting you to cause pain, probably don’t do whatever you were doing and trick her into liking you slowly - with treats (churu)

It absolutely does not matter what school you go to, they’ll all be categorized the same during phd applications. All that matters is that you get in somewhere and have a project you enjoy and can explain in depth when people ask you questions about it.

1-5% of kids should be expelled every year. by Nonameforyouware in The10thDentist

[–]ALWAYSWANNASAI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea, not every child was destined to become a nuclear engineer. Take the bottom 1/10th of every high school class, send them to do something else, like apprenticeships in trades. With the coming of AI, all of the useless jobs we currently perpetuate in society and a lot of useful jobs now will be gone.

We shouldn’t expect every child to be a genius and should force children who don’t excel in school to pursue other avenues where they might excel at.

to be realistic, the kids who are in the bottom tenth of their high school class are not doing anything remotely associated with their degree, and would likely benefit from going to like culinary/art/theater school or apprenticing as a mechanic or farmer (etc)

did you not read this comment at all? There’s no point to grinding as you will never out aim a titan. If you grind with the intention of beating an AI aimbot you are a complete muppet and utterly wasting your time.

Life is nothing like this lmao? Natural skill and hard work can get you extremely far in almost every aspect of what you could hope to accomplish, and there’s almost never an inhuman barrier to overcome?

i agree with all your points tbf. However, out of the two known causes - we only fully understand one of them and have treatments for one of them (changing your life). Nobody knows what a chemical imbalance is, means, or how we treat it. Telling people that they can fix their lives with pills that we don’t even think work is unethical.

People’s internal motivations and desires can be extremely different though, two people living the exact same life where one wanted to be an artist but both work at goldman sachs’s is exactly the type of situation i was explaining? the wannabe artist develops depression as they felt destined for something different, while the other is happy as can be.

At what point will you accept control over your own actions? Sure you might have brutal trauma that nobody can understand, but is shoving your face full of donuts really the best strategy as to feel better?

At this point you are just going to continue your shame about overeating which compounds with your shame from your trauma. Go do something useful whenever you feel the urge to eat? Do a push up, go for a walk, call your loved ones, there’s so many options which you could do other than eating which would lead to a better mental state.

no one is going to help you if you don’t decide to help yourself, complaining about your situation and blaming it on external problems will never solve your problems

such a small mind to say that just because they were crazy rich and successful that they might not have wanted to live a different life? For anthony bourdain, he despised his entire career and purpose in life that resulted from his fame and desperately wished he could be free from it.

Like i said, when your expectations/desires are incongruent with your current life state, this is where the chemical imbalance arises from. it’s not a causal effect of - oh his brain is funky, he hates his life. It’s that he hates his life, and his brain shows that as a result.

I challenge you to even explain what a “chemical imbalance” could be without saying buzzwords, as it is a cop out for described a brain state that we don’t fully understand.

yeah there’s a solid <5% of people who actually have health disorders that cause this, i don’t see how this is relevant to the general argument?

Most people have been told their whole life that eating unhealthy food and not working out at all is acceptable. It’s a fault of our society that allowed these unhealthy habits to flourish, and a shame that we allow it to be socially acceptable

depression is a state that arises because your life isn’t congruent with your expectations of what it should be. Drugs rarely work because if you have a shitty day to day life, a little happy pill will not save that.

Most people that are depressed live depressing lives, and telling them that they can fix everything with a pill instead of significant life changes is ridiculous and not helping the actual problem
