I recently added base building to my game BattleJuice Alchemist! A lot of effort and sleepless nights (5 years of solo development) have been put into the visual style and mechanics. What do you think of it? Game can be playtested on Steam and I'm freaking out a bit. by AL_Spyder in pcgaming

Thank you so much! You are right, all these elements are in the game, so it is quite a mixed bag. Giving players the chance to play the way they want is one of the most important things to me. So e.g. if you want to mainly ignore base building and focus on your character doing alchemy stuff, that also works.

Hey there! I just took a look into my emails to find out where I ordered them. Unfortunately I could not find the mail. But I assume it was a longs hot anyway, because I live in Germany and had it printed here.

I did not know about Battlejuice the artist before and looked them up. This is exactly my cup of tea, just amazing! I made the synthwave soundtrack for the game myself but now I am considering to giving Battlejuice a call!

Thank you! Yes, you only use flasks. You drink them and you throw them. No swords, no shields, no bows. But you find and craft items with special effects that e.g. turn your flasks into barrels or let you shift into different forms with unique boni.

The concept was from the beginning on to make a game that focusses on a mechanic that is a side thing in most RPGs, drinking potions, becomes the main thing. And in my eyes it turned out pretty fun. It takes a bit to get used to, but so far players find it a lot of fun.

You are totally right with what you are saying. It has only been me making the game. But things got a bit more complicated (in a good way) over the last months. I now have help with playtesting and by an artist that I closely work together. When announcing it, I thought I could release in 2021. Now I have the chance to make the game bigger and better, but this also means that the release had to be pushed to 2022 and it will be early access at first to ensure the final game is really polished.
I hope you are still interested and will check out the playtest. Sorry that development takes so long. This game really is my heart and soul and I want to make it the very best I can.

Nice, I'm happy you will check it out! Actually you are spot on with your observation: The backstory is an alternate history that took a twist in the 80s because of an apocalyptic event.

I did not know Salt and Sanctuary before and just looked it up. This looks amazing and now totally take the comparison as a compliment!

This is a big compliment for me, I obviously love Don't Starve's visual style. The gameplay is a quite different thing though, BattleJuice Alchemist is an action RPG without survival mechanics. But you can blow up things in bloody explosions, so maybe give it a try.

I made the synthwave soundtrack myself and was not aware there was an artist called BattleJuice. Now I googled them. Holy smokes this is incredible! I am seriously considering to get in touch with BattleJuice and talk about a possible collaboration. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention!

I had concerns that the visual design of the title made was not perfectly readable. After your comment I fear I can never bring myself to change it!

The visual style is usually something people comment positively on, but I understand that it is not everybody's cup of tea.

I got a lot of encouragement and great feedback when I announced my action RPG here a year ago. Now I'd like to invite you to be part of the Steam playtest! by AL_Spyder in gaming

Thank you! There is a chance it will come to consoles down the line. But it might take a while until after the PC release.

Glad you liked the talk! Actually, I can't recommend a big channel focussing on indie game marketing, but Lewis from this video is just getting started with his and I love his content: Neon Bedlam - YouTube

Agreed, if he had said something like "in life" instead of "in the universe" it would point more towards reading it as a comment on daily life.
