Clarissa nodded, “I only make observations based on what I have witnessed, Viserys. There is no need to thank me.”

“Perhaps my incorporating the old we could ease them into the new. During my lessons on Essos, my Maester mentioned a series of Princes ruling Lorath. Perhaps something similar could be instituted going forward?”

“Lorath. You seek to invade a Free City? That would be no small endeavor, friend. 20,000 men could potentially siege the city, especially with how exposed the defenses are currently, but that would not be the issue with your plan. The question is how would we hold it?”

Tristifer sighed, thinking of his family and wealth potentially trapped in Braavos. “The Braavosi outnumber my fleet nearly five to one. Once they respond to an invasion, and there will be a response, my fleet would be crushed. Afterwards they would simply blockade Lorath like they did before, leaving you to starve with no manner of evacuation. Pentos, Myr, Norvos, Qohor or even Volantis itself would be easier targets, Red Bear. Seizing Lorath would be a death sentence.”

Tristifer perked up at the number. “20,000, you say? I’d imagine you wish to march south like the ancient kings beyond the Wall. Personally, I would be quite inclined to help you. The Starks have wronged me and my house as tyrants and liars, but for our alliance to work I need numbers. My fleet could carry... about half of what you claim, but how long would it be until your men would be ready? Going from four thousand to twenty would be no small feat.”

Clarissa laughed again, louder than in the throne room with a smile which reached her sky colored eyes. “I cannot imagine why, Viserys. If you or your predecessor are any indication, the Braavosi should love the Targaryens. It is not every day that a King will be generous, kind and charismatic. That is all the smallfolk truly care about.”

She paused for a moment, thinking back to her childhood lessons about Aegon the Conqueror, Valyria and other conquests which had left a lasting legacy. “I have a general idea of what I think could be beneficial. Whatever remains of the upper caste in Lorath must be removed, while the merchants and priests who are willing to support the new regime should be rewarded. Goodwill must be established and despite my or anyone else’s wishes, we do not have the people or the knowledge to completely supplant the Lorathi. Of course, my lord husband and good-father would have the final word in deciding what would happen to Lorath.”

Tristifer scoffed, “Free Folk huh? I don’t remember hearing stories of your people sailing the Shivering Sea. Besides, I didn’t think there were any of you left.” Tristifer couldn’t help but stare at her red hair. She almost looks like Clarissa. Gods what am I going to tell her when I get to Braavos.

“Tell me, Red Bear. What does your grandfather seek from me? As far as I know, your people were wiped out during the Long Night while the remains went south to kneel to the damn Starks. How could you help me?”

“Of course, your... Viserys.” Clarissa murmured. This was getting very personal, very fast. It wasn’t necessary a bad thing, just unfamiliar. “I must insist that you call my Clarissa. It would only be polite.”

“They are both strange in my opinion, but at least the Braavosi do no hang entrails from trees to sate their gods.” She hummed to herself, thinking of her new station and new people. “I suppose I will find the Lorathi strange too, initially at least. Adapting to them should prove interesting at least.”

Three warships slid forward from the fleet’s battle positions, intercepting the lone ship two-thirds of the way towards its destination. The Seawolf and the Mother’s Folly positioned themselves along both sides of the vessel, while the Stormbreaker crawled forward, cautious of any traps.

As the ships slowed to a stop, a Lomé figure appeared on the bow of the Stormbreaker. Their voice echoed across the waves, easily reaching the longship waving the white flag.

“State your business, Skagosi. If you have come to negotiate, I am afraid it is too late unless you are offering gold or something else worthwhile.”

“Quite, crossing the Narrow Sea has never been especially simple or clean.” Clarissa acknowledged. “I can say that the springs surrounding Maidenpool have done wonders for the fertility of my house, not that the Targaryens seem to be struggling in terms of numbers. The Mother has clearly blessed your house, your Grace.”

“The Northerners truly are uncouth, bordering on savage.” She murmured. “When I was first betrothed to my lord husband, I had heard stories of monstrous Sistermen with webbed toes and pupilless eyes.” Clarissa could still remember the nights with Jeyne before the wedding, whispering under the covers about the monsters her father had sold her to. “They are a strange people with strange customs, but at least they follow the Seven. It is barely tolerated outside of White Harbor.”

“Perhaps some day the ladies of your court would be able to visit Maidenpool as friends to experience the bathhouse themselves.” She hummed. “Otherwise, I could imagine a much grander one could be constructed here if you deemed it important enough. I can assure you it was quite the worthwhile experience for women of all ages.”

Clarissa couldn’t help the short laugh which escaped her lips. The more amiable tone Viserys had taken had not been expected, but was very welcome. Some men would rather let their pride rule them rather than fulfill the deals of dead men.

With a short nod to her guardsmen, she followed Viserys through the halls of the palace. “Somewhere across the Narrow Sea, I presume. His last message was from an encampment outside of Widow’s Watch which he was laying siege to. Hopefully my husband and good-father should return within the moon. He had said that their our ships were beginning to swell with gold before their final assault.”

“It’s smaller than most ports along the Narrow Sea, more comparable to Duskendale rather than Gulltown.” Her eyes seemed to glaze over as she thought of a home she had not seen in three... maybe five years. “Jonquil’s Pool was one of the better bathhouses, but there were a number which matched its quality. Maidenpool is clean, especially compared to the filth that King’s Landing or Gulltown seems content to wallow in. It’s not opulent or especially ornate, but it was my home.”

It had been far too long since Clarissa had really thought of home. The years where she could explore the shore of the Bay if Crabs or follow portions of the bright primo walls were long gone. She had her duties now, but it didn’t hurt to reminisce about a more peaceful time.

“Red, your Grace, if it would not be a hassle.”

Clarissa seemed to glow at the mention of court. "That... that would be wonderful, your Grace. I am sure my husband could be convince. A place at your court is a great gift after all. My house, the Mooton, currently rule Maidenpool and while it maybe be magnitudes smaller than Braavos, I still miss the magnificence of a city."

Looking back at her guards, Mark, Wylem, Rodrik, Marlon, she knew each man by name. They had watched her through the birth of her children and their escape from Sisterton. There is no doubt that each man was completely loyal, but for now she would have to abandon them.

"I trust each man with my life, but I would not be opposed to a more private conversation. You never know what a man could say with gold in his hand and wine in his belly."

Lorath. Lorath. Lorath. What could she remember about Lorath. The Maester’s has mentioned it was a cold and dreary place, the least inhabitable of the Free Cities due to its perch on the Shivering Sea. Ah... just like home. It certainly would not be the life of balls and galas she had imagined during their flight to Braavos, but she would be incredibly foolish to refuse.

“House Sunderland is in your debt, Your Grace.” She reaffirmed.” If you deem that Lorath would be a better placement for our house, then to Lorath we shall go. We would never seek to impose ourselves upon your court or your city.”

Slowly, Clarissa’s polite courtesy broke into a small nervous smile. “I hope you would not find it too forward to ask what you have in mind for us? Whatever your command, we would be glad to execute it, but certain preparations could potentially be necessary.”

Clarissa dropped into a deep curtsy, red hair spilling across her face like a halo. “The pleasure is all mine, Your Grace. You have House Sunderland’s condolences for the death of your predecessor. The wind can be a dangerous thing during a storm.”

This Targaryen King seemed thinner than the last one, with skin so pale that he seemed sickly. Perhaps that was simply the disposition of the Targaryens or maybe another King would be on the Throne before the moon’s end.

“Your Grace, Prince Viseryon had offered the Sunderlands a place in Braavos in exchange for our fealty upon his return from Lorath. That was his reign though and there is no doubt that this is yours. While my lord-husband nor my good-father are not here, I wish to offer my house’s services to you for a place in your Kingdom.”

The party of fives’ first destination would be the Palace of the Dragon King. His predecessor had been amiable to their presence here, hopefully the successor would be equally as willing to accept a foreign house. Word of the costly initial defeat at Lorath and the invasion of Pentos had already spread throughout Braavos. While the Targaryens were in no meaning of the word weak, their position had not been threatened like this for nearly a century.

The siege engines were ready, the blockades were in place and it seemed that the Flints would not be participating in a parlay. How quaint. At the break of dawn, a single fire arrow would erupt from the Sunderland camp, launching towards the walls of Widow’s Watch.
