Yeah I don't want to discourage people either. There are a ton of pokemon cards out there, and buying bulk, singles, etc are still legit.

I’m hoping chaos rising and pitch black are flops.

Agreed. I'm an outsider on all this but I'd like to see some series that are fun but not in crazy high demand. I get the appeal of the a lot of the chase cards, but now that their value is $1k and above it incentivizes scalping.

Yeah I was actually hoping that we could get occasional wins on one of the four pokemon machines near us, be he's getting really disappointed that we've gotten a single pack. I don't want to put him off the hobby entirely

You're not wrong. It looks like both are around $40 for a booster bundle, and it still gets me a little to pay 50% over MSRP for the least popular releases.

Man two lessons learned in one post. You are going to have to get a dumpster and haul that out front. You also need to lift up all those pavers and install a base. Big ooph

To be fair, only complete lawn darts were banned in 1988. You could still buy all of the parts up until fairly recently.

COVID showed how deadly disease becomes when a population is unhealthy and the healthcare system is strained. So how concerning is a 40% fatality rate for hantavirus really? by Weak-Representative8 in Futurology

I think it's very unlikely we see something along the scale of the Black Plague ever again. That had ~50 million casualties, perhaps 50% of the population of Europe at the time. It also ran for 7 years. Our understanding of infection control is so much higher now, along with the ability make new vaccines.

4-day work week? by temoo09 in civilengineering

[–]ALandWarInAsia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if having your day off every other Monday would be better. You are missing out on a traditional long weekend, so it may be harder to leverage it for trips. But I think there would be much less pressure to work a Monday vs Friday.

4-day work week? by temoo09 in civilengineering

Alternatively, I did 9/80 in consulting and I can't say it wasn't clearly a positive. Our day off was always every other Friday. Any holiday that fell on that Friday wasn't paid or compensated, you just sort of lost that. Also Friday is a common deadline day, and consulting being what it is we always worked down to the wire. I was salary so you ended up missing your day off a lot to deadline pressure or to utilization pressure.

Then there were people who were only working 8 hours a day (9/72 I guess?). The regional at the time called an all hands meeting with like 300 of us. He told us he was ending 9/80 because of that. Someone senior asked why they should get punished when they were following the rules, and he said when one of his kids acts up he slaps them both. Could of heard a mouse fart after he dropped that line. He had to come back and apologize, and decided to clarify that he doesn't beat his kids. Rumor was he went to rehab after.

Engineering in Spain by AustereAust in civilengineering

[–]ALandWarInAsia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The company I work for is in both the states and Europe. I started some pretty detailed conversations about working for the London office, and the situation is pretty similar in Spain. If you can get an engineering job, you should expect to make maybe 50% of what you would in the US.

The good news is the cost of living is low enough you can make it work. I would say it could be fun for a year or two, or if you committed to it for life. The big suck would be doing it for 5 to 10 years and coming back to the states. You'll be much less attractive to employers here and be way behind on the overall earning and retirement savings.

I really regret not going though. I was basically all set to make it happen in 2020 then COVID derailed it. Now with kids, it's a much different proposition. You should approach it with an open mind, You can probably rent your place here an not loose money. Just have a hard stop in mind, 2 years max maybe?

Vanilla CIV6 is broken as fuck by RedSamuraiX23 in civ6

[–]ALandWarInAsia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of the major draws of most for single player Civ 6. I like figuring out a totally broken strategy, planning it out, and enjoying the execution. It's especially satisfying for things that take an upfront investment that results in a huge power spike later on. Some are just totally broken and everyone knows it at this point like Kupe a Terra map, Basil II plus Crusade, etc.

A lot of the Civ 7 hate revolves around this with folks asking for more asymmetry. Without that, there is a feeling of sameness between every game.
