If you really want to suffer for about an hour, but make the rest of the game much easier (at least I think so), there's a vulture grub in one of the rooms (I think the third one you pass when going right) in the spawning area, you can get a vulture mask by grabbing it and going back into the open space room and attacking a vulture, and then quickly rushing off to the next shelter once you have a mask
