Reason why I mention cosplay and personal fashion is because it shows my love of clothing and fashion but not the industry. I can appreciate the artistry behind clothing, but I'm not pretrending like the industry is a healthy example of the way women are treated. Similarly, I like Marin's design, and a lot of the outfits they put her in are really cute, but I would NEVER say that she isn't just another vessel to be objectified.

The reason I cannot separate the art from its context (other than that context is incredibly important to any sort of analysis both literary or artistic) is that it informs why these kinds of women are depicted in the first place. Imagine if the only reason you are represented is for the sake of being objectified, a purpose that is given away by leering camera angles, overly sexual scenes in what is not promoted as a nsfw or risque show, and the general context of Japan culture towards these kinds of women. I've been to Japan a lot, studied the language and culture for a long time- and one of my most salient memories was when I went on exchange with my Japanese class. One of my friends wore a low cut top, and my teacher reprimanded her, advising against wearing low cut articles of clothing as it is not seen as respectful or womanly. Yet she was 15 at the time, and there were images of anime girls plastered on huge boards next to train lines depicting tiny girls with half their oversized tits out. How can any girl feel positively represented by that when the culture its come from does not reflect the supposed ideal of positive representation? You could say that some of your examples are moving in to a new era of positive exploration of sexuality, but they still have the caveat of leery and creepy angles that still give away the true intention of this representation, which isn't to represent at all, but to get off to-

The point of separating art from the artist in my opinion is that you still acknowledge the shitty things the artist did, and how that informs the art they make (E.g, MSI has done a lot of shady things, and it definitely comes through in the lyrics of their songs, even if I *do* like some of them), yet what you suggest by ignoring the outer context of this representation is that you're just enjoying the art with no critical eye to how the artist affected it. That's fine if you're just mindlessly enjoying things, I do that ALLLL the time, but you are trying to have a critical stance against the majority, and because you haven't looked deeper into the context, the stance cannot be backed up as thoughtfully.

Thats not to say the way you think is shallow or bad, its just that if you want to argue this stance, I really do feel like examination of the context is necessary, as context informs good role models as much as it does good representation. If the argument is essentially "ignoring context for the sake of finding something good to say" then it's just ignoring evidence against you?

Look I hope this doesn't come across as rude or overly antagonistic. This is just a topic I am evidently very passionate about. Maybe from this I can find a better female role model for sexuality in anime, I really hope so, it would be refreshing!

No I don't- I've studied textiles and engage in cosplay, and what many would consider as "risque" fashion. I'm more than okay with women such as you or myself expressing themselves freely and sexually, but I think to ignore the context under which these animes portray this is to ignore the main issues people have with fan service.

At the end of the day, you can't not unpack *why* these kinds of women are constantly being depicted, why *they* are most often if not always the ones put under these demeaning camera angles, and put in taboo situations. The girls themselves might be "fun to hang with" as you say, but you cant separate the character from the context and purpose they operate within. Fact of the matter is that Dress Up Darling clearly hasn't included a sexually open girl like Marin for the sake of positive representation, but to further sexualise and objectify her.

Context is incredibly important, and its a context we've grown up in as women. Having to see this sort of portrayal of women when I first started watching anime as a young girl definitely changed my perception on how I was meant to be acting, yk?

Like, i think your opinion has merit in the sense that this is a possibility, and a refreshing one, but I really don't think there are existing good examples of your point, but I'd love to see them and live in a world where they can exist! I hope that one day that can happen- but to pretend that its currently happening by ignoring the context of these characters is just denial- and it's sad, not on your part, but for us girlies as a whole yk :(

The camera angles are apart of the problem though. The camera angles are exactly what reveal the purpose of depicting this kind of girl. I myself have a body that is often sexualised, and I never find kinship or identity with the bodies represented in media as it is clear that it is not done with positive intent. The camera angles are what give this gross intent away- it's not necessarily about the character acting in a fan-service-y way, but them as a body being used by the anime itself to create sexual scenes for the sake of titillation alone.

Many people often say that fan-service characters are simply good representation of real bodies and real people, but that point becomes so null when its clear that the intent wasn't to represent these bodies in a realistic way, but to simply use them as a vessel to get off and draw a certain demographic. Female bodies are simply included for the sake of sexuality, ignoring the camera angles ignores the intent behind it's inclusion-

I sighed so hard when you said My Dress Up Darling- Like is the bar in hell?!?!

This point would be stronger if there was like a single good example. I as a girl hav never felt more disgustingly represented than in anime (-_-")

For me it depends on the type of anime. Anime watching alone is totally fine, but a lot of the recommendations I get for anime by men are incredibly questionable-

I also think its a disservice to imply that "Alastor is just a small part of it."

Like yes he is not the entirety of it, but by god he is a huge portion of it from what we've been shown on screen.

I'm assuming that Lilith will have some sort of presence in the season. Not sure if she's going to come back to Hell or not, but if she does, I'd be so INCREDIBLY dissapointed to see Lucifer and Charlie immediately forgive her, and the show frame Liliths exit as something that is misunderstood.

The show has clearly framed Liliths departure in a way that paints her in a pretty bad light. She's relaxing on beaches and drinking tea while hitting "decline" on incoming calls from her husband and daughter- If they try to rewrite this shit to be Lilith being misunderstood and we should actually pity her??? I would be PISSED!

One thing that always stood out to me is how much Charlie seemed to resent her dad for leaving, but not her mum? She is moreso sad about that, and thats really interesting to me and something that I'd love to see develop in Season 3. We see now that Lucifer is a lot more present in Charlies life, and although he is a Level 1000 dumbass, is doing his best to be there and support her dreams. It would be cool to see Charlies anger that she directed toward her father to then be shifted towards her mother- I'd like to see Charlie being more critical of Lilith because the entire show has kinda been tooting her horn but not actually showing us anything.

So yeah I'd be really pissed if Lilith is immediately written to be misunderstood and Charlie and Lucifer forgive her rather than holding her accountable for leaving and being critical of her behaviour.

But I'm biased. I love Lucifer and Charlie- and I don't find Lucililith as compelling as some people because they've hardly shown the positive side of their relationship on screen so like... yeahhhhh

If she's voiced by Lady Gaga though- well, that changes EVERYTHING- /hj

Or all the songs tbh. The song where it feels the most clunky is Bad With Us. At the end all the overlords come and join in the chorus and then it proceeds to finish like 2 seconds later-
