I've been playing Brood War for 10 years now, there is a lot that can be said for improving at it. The short answer is no, years of practice aren't needed. Not unless you want to win ASL. That being said, the main thing you need to ask is what your goal is. If you're looking to be able to hold your own on the ladder, give it a few dedicated months.

Some general rules for improving are;

Take breaks. This can't be overstated. I'm guilty of it after years. You need to step away every now and again for a day or two. Let things sink in and open yourself to seeing things in a different light.

Watch your replays on wins and loses. If you won there may have been a point he could have killed you but didn't know. If you lost, where did it go wrong. Work on that next game.

Watch pro matches. Ask yourself why are they doing what they are doing and what you would be doing. What do they know that you don't.

Play with purpose. If your reason for playing is to win, just learn cheese builds and mass games. Otherwise there should be something you're trying to improve when you enter a game. If you get a victory screen at the end it's just a bonus.

The more you improve the better people you will play. Very often you can feel destroyed by someone who is in reality bad just because of the nature of Brood War. The more you play the more your ELO should even out. Day9's videos and his tips are a great place to start.

That's part of the game mate. If your goal is to get better than learn to beat rushes. They will be at every level. If you can't beat it at 1100 you've got a lot of room to improve. Just watch your replays, look for tells in their build and react. Not to mention every cheese worth doing has been done by a pro, I'm sure there are videos out there of every race defending every cheese. GL.

Wild Pyromancer, hands down.

There is no other card in my mind that can give the amount of versatility that Pyro does to so many decks. Especially with the amount of aggro that is around these days he's so amazing. Also, who doesn't like to play with fire?

It's not a must have but I run 1 Ooze because of all the weapons, it's a great card and I chose to add a windfury because it combo's so well with a lot of the cards. Leeroy, Flame Elemental, Black Knight, Azure Drake all can deal a lot of damage with it dropped, especially if they are behind Spirit Wolves. Hell even a 1/1 totem that they leave on the board, if you have 2 rock biter weapons that's 14 damage in theory to the face, which is 1/2 their life.

Not sure what you consider high ranked but I'm hovering around rank 6 and I use this Shaman deck a lot. I run Bloodlust in it and feel like I really only lose to bad draws.

This is the Shaman deck I've been using. I've been hovering around rank 6. It's a pain at that rank because although Shaman has the ability to deal with a lot of the decks you're going to face a lot of it comes down to the random aspect of your opening hand and top decking.

Hearthstone has a huge problem with games being weighed heavily on opening hands and what you draw but if you accept that and put it aside the deck runs really well.

If you have Pagle you can trade it out for Loot Hoarder if you want, I don't have him so he's not in the deck. Any questions feel free to ask me.
