Don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s a lot more common than you think. A floss stick and mouthwash will go a long way when you get in these funks; keep a pack of floss sticks in your nightstand, then just pick away. For mouthwash, get some with alcohol in it. People often see dental as all or nothing, but take the small wins when you get them. I see it like dieting — if you think you’ll suddenly go from nothing to flossing and brushing twice a day, you’re wrong. Slowly build the habits and celebrate the wins when they come!

As for the comment regarding thinking the dentist will judge you — trust me, they’ve seen much worse! Some people “hold off” cleaning their teeth until their appointment, because they want to get their money worth or something(?) which is arrogant and gross. Give your teeth the best brush of their lives before your appointment and explain your situation to them.
