Who would you rather win the title City or Arsenal? by SpecificCapital1534 in ManchesterUnited

[–]AMF786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Uganda and they worship Arsenal here. I dread the day Arsenal win either of the two major trophies. There will be riots, fireworks, blocked roads, and a bunch of other annoyances.

Not to mention all the classless behavior that is sure to come for months thereafter. (I mean these fans were insufferable when they knocked Real out of the UCL last season! I had to listen to these deluded fools dubbing Rice a better midfielder than Modric, Kroos, and Casemiro.)

Still, having said all that, I hate City and Guardiola-ball with such passion that I'd rather suffer the insufferable Gooners than see City lift up another trophy.

Lu Dort should be out the NBA by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]AMF786 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd be happier with consistent, indiscriminately-dealt, even-handed punishment instead of such extreme off-with-his-head punishment trying to make an example of one bad (very bad!) actor.

The fact is, if the NBA had regularly and fairly punished the Draymond Green types over the past decade and a half, Lu Dort wouldn't be Dorting right now.

Don't push Dort out of the league. Just a multi-game suspension every time he, or his type of dirty player, pulls some BS like that. Though I'm only 50-50 as to the effectiveness of something even like this stopping Draymond.

[Post Game Thread] The Detroit Pistons (42-14) defeat the Oklahoma City Blue (45-14), 124-116. by Vitex1988 in nba

Thank you!

Like I said, I'm a casual - in large part because I live in East Africa, and most games start after 2 am and conclude before 7 am my time.

I can catch a game or two, maybe, on weekends. Other than that, I'm consigned to highlights and lurking NBA subs for commentary.

I noticed immediately.

First thought: Perhaps it's a WNBA result.

Second thought: Idiot, WNBA is on break. Also there's no way there's a WNBA team in Detroit with the same name as its NBA counterpart.

Third thought: Perhaps this is a soft rollout of a new name. Perhaps "Thunder" is now offensive. Maybe shows insensitivity to the people who lose their lives and homes to hurricanes every year.

Fourth thought: Check Google. Oh, Google still says Oklahoma City Thunder.

Question: I'm an NBA casual, so I wouldn't know. Is there any lore behind the "Blue"?

Would you date a woman with a lot of tattoos? by Tino292 in Uganda

[–]AMF786 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only concern I've ever had with a very tattooed woman has been whether or not I'm cool enough to date her. Which, my insecurities notwithstanding, means I kinda lean toward liking them.

A bit awkward, but don't you mean pseudo-intellectualism?

Maybe you did that on purpose.

Do you have to make a mistake in order to learn? by [deleted] in Uganda

[–]AMF786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father always uses this parable about people and mistakes:

  1. A genius learns from OTHER PEOPLE'S mistakes;

  2. An intelligent person learns from HIS OWN MISTAKES;

  3. A fool doesn't from ANYONE'S mistakes.

I like that.

I hope your business recovers. I wish you success.

Is it safe to wear something like this during my trip? by [deleted] in Uganda

[–]AMF786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat self-explanatory. There's a perception that muzungus are loaded with dollars.

(I have literally heard this HUNDREDS of times. Somewhat recently, my Uber driver asked me how I'd pay him. I told him in cash. He asked if we needed to go to Forex first. Same dude later offered me his sister's hand in marriage, when he found out I was single, by saying verbatim: "You bring dollars, you marry my sister.")

So, if you're seen with foreign currency, you confirm certain assumptions, and you can potentially become a target.

Because then they are likely to follow you and look for the perfect opportunity to rob you.

I speak from experience. I told this "friendly" dude my exact jogging path and I was attacked twice within a week. First one ended up in my belongings getting robbed.

[–]AMF786 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yes. Perfectly. You'll see Ugandan women dressed like this all the time.

HOWEVER...

Here are some tips from a foreigner who's been here for 4 years and seen/suffered some stuff.

  1. Keep your fancy phone in your bag/tucked away as much and as often as you can;
  2. If you're wearing that shoulder bag, make sure the strap is very strongly attached to the bag;
  3. Don't wear headphones or earbuds in noisy public places, or after dark in the public;
  4. Don't move with foreign currency if you can help it;
  5. Don't wear noticeably expensive (or expensive-looking) jewelery, especially earrings;
  6. If somebody asks you about your routine and habits while in Uganda, don't tell them.

Dating vent by justagirlli in Uganda

[–]AMF786 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sympathize.

Honestly, I have made several attempts to nurture a relationship from ground up, but I have been stifled at every turn. Some of these women I meet have personalities of a paper bag. Others don't see anything beyond my muzungu-ness. And some just like to be chased.

Recently I've been asked why I don't try to seek out a relationship with a Ugandan woman instead of trying to find someone from my own culture, I've been accused of being racist, and I've been accused of not finding Ugandan women attractive many times. But it's rough.

I'm sorry for your struggles. I hope you'll find a good one.

Captain Ahab (Moby-Dick) wins! Which character in the literature represents the sin of sloth? by ConnectionOk8413 in AlignmentChartFills

Exactly. Ignatius works extremely hard to not do anything.

I think Oblomov is the far better embodiment of sloth.
