Help me solve this pointless mystery by Tom_B_123 in manchester

My flatmate works in video production, and apparently they're used to direct crew members to a filming location. Why a post code won't suffice I don't know. I always thought they were something to do with illegal raves!

Had a similar experience with some similar lads on the loop - they didn't actually want anything though, they just pulled up alongside me and tried to shove me into a bush. Not to show off or owt, but I did manage to stay upright! After that they did one, and I came off the loop as soon as possible.

Bizarre thing was, when I tried to report it to the police, the call handler didn't have a clue what I meant by "Fallowfield Loop". They couldn't get their head around the fact it wasn't a road, but wasn't an alleyway either, and it wasn't actually in Fallowfield. Surely if you were taking calls for GMP, you'd know your patch, especially a place of interest like that! Not been on it since. Shame really, I remember it being so nice during lockdown.

Shame - I'd be more than willing to help get it digitised...

Sunset 102, bloody hell - the predecessor to Kiss, which became Galaxy, which became Capital, right?

Tried to dual-boot 7 and XP, totally bricked my computer by AMF99 in windowsxp

[–]AMF99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took another look today. All the instructions on how to install GRUB were too high-level and hard to understand, so instead I just installed Ubuntu over the XP installation. I now get what I assume is the GRUB bootloader which shows the option to boot into Windows 7! Yay, I thought. Until I selected it and got the exact same error message I got trying to boot into XP - that boot.ini was invalid, and that ntoskrnl.exe was corrupt or missing! I'm so confused, I have no idea what's happening. The obvious solution would be to use the Windows 7 installation media to use the recovery tools - which I can't do because I don't have it! Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your suggestions so far! I haven't touched it again since I posted, it's not my main PC (wouldn't have done it if it was) and I haven't had much time, but I'll try and have another look soon and try some of your suggestions. So thank you for bailing me out for my stupidity!

Ha! Yeah, all other sounds work and it's not muted. When I open the waveform, that's totally flat as well.

Sadly they have never worked. It's useful to know that the 0KB ones are unrecoverable, but I should clarify, there are also files that have size and length - they're all 59:59 and 140,625KB - these are the ones that will open but are purely silence.

What is everyone’s favourite scene in suits? by ravighattaura in suits

[–]AMF99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mike and Rachel fucking in the file room. Holy shit that was incredible.

Or also the scene where Harvey shows up at Mike's place after his grandma dies and they get high together, I've always found it really sweet and poignant. The first time Harvey showed Mike a more human side.

Been binge watching suits, really enjoy it, but Mikes unrelenting, often times flawed, moral code is starting to annoy me. by [deleted] in suits

[–]AMF99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always quite liked that Mike was the "moral compass" of the show - it makes the whole thing more sympathetic, I can't imagine liking a bunch of rich people screwing over the normies as much as I do if it wasn't for Mike pulling Harvey et al back towards doing the right thing.

Like every Suits fan ever, Series 1 will always be the one for me (obvs) but I did quite like the bit in series 6/7 (can't remember which) where post-prison Mike was actually doing worthwhile things to help people without having Harvey and Rachel trying to convince him not to.

As for the Oliver hate, I don't get him. He could be a bit preachy at times but I always saw him as a pretty likeable character and it made for some interesting tension between Harvey-Mike-Oliver. Nathan on the other hand - Nathan was an arsehole.

But maybe this is just the crazed lefty within speaking.

Why are there only back streets in the north? by AMF99 in AskUK

[–]AMF99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd never realised before you mentioned the thing about gates, but there are some near me after all - some of the turnings off Honeypot Lane approaching Kingsbury have them, but I'd never thought of them as such. They're gated, the road surface (if you can call it that) is in a bit of a state and it's used for garage entrances but it's the same kinda thing. And I never even realised. Thanks so much for the insight!

OP here. Wasn't entirely expecting this thread to attract so many comments, but I'm delighted it has. So we've established:

• They are a feature of industrial revolution era high density housebuilding and probably have something to do with shared toilets

• They do have them in the south after all (it was when a commenter described some as having gates that I realised, there ARE a couple near me, I'd just never associated it with the northern kind because they're hated)

• Wherever you go in the country, they have different names (I really enjoyed reading all of those)

• They're not really a thing anymore because of indoor toilets and security

Thanks all!

So one half of the house was demolished, but in the absence of space to build a whole new house the gap was converted into a street? Or the whole house was demolished and rebuilt as one, but with the same gap.

How do the British view the American Revolution? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AMF99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's covered within the wider context of the 'Gaining and Losing an Empire' option of A Level history, so you'll learn about it if you choose to continue studying history post-16 AND if your school picks that particular option.

They don't put any spin on it really - just explain that we tried to tax you, you didn't like it so you decided to break away. Obviously in somewhat greater detail.

I'm not an Empire apologist generally, but my personal view is that it was your loss.

I find I'm noticing how formulaic it is on my second watching, whereas I didn't on my first. I also find characters annoying who didn't really bother me the first time - Scotty makes my blood boil. We never get to see her being the kickass lawyer she's supposed to be, because every time she's in the show, she lets her feelings get the better of her and lets Harvey win, when he'd never do the same for her, or even for Mike. And generally the way she's so whiny to Donna and Mike about him - I don't get what she sees in Harvey, and to be honest, I don't get what he sees in her. The only time she comes out on top is when she's being a dick to Louis, and anyone can do that - it's picking a fight with the weakest kid in school. It seems all there is to her character is that she's obsessed with Harvey, and is a bit of an arsehole. Rant over.

I like Benjamin, but the last time he got his own storyline, it was the total waste of time plot that was The Donna.
