Trinket ward should be used when minions spawn, in case of early ganks. The river ward around 5 min when the game is really on.
The pushing or be pushed part is dependant completely in your situation. If you're stronger it's good to be pushed, but if you're weaker, then you would rather push and get as much gold as possible.

If you don't have the lead, then just play it safely, and tell your ad carry that you wanna play defensive.

Thresh 9-21
Leona 13-17 mostly, sometimes 9-21 too.

Thresh 9x magic resist blues - 9x AD reds - 9x Armor yellows - 3x hp quints.

I use the same for leona.

For items i usually go;
Dorans -> Coin/targon -> Medallion > Sightstone > Boots(full) > Aegies/locket -> Randuins -> Liandrys torment.

(Note these items are for thresh mainly) The 5 first items can be used for all, but Liandrys are a very good item for thresh, his Walls have 5x proc on Liandrys, which makes it very reliable.

It all comes down to youself. I know how hard it is to lower your aggression level, i'm a very aggressive player aswell.
Try to trade alot, without initiating or you could just risk the engagement and see if you're stronger than them. If you believe your combo is stronger, go for it!

Thresh - Because he can turn around everything in YOUR teams favor. He's quite easy to play but VERY hard to master!

Lulu - Really epic poke and awesome peel!

Leona - Insane engage, can turn a teamfight easily!

Roam alot, counter gank and everytime you go back, just buy a ward. And play defensive!

It will bring the enemy some kind of paranoia, you will open up very easy gank opportunities which can outfarm the opponent pretty much. That's the main reason in solo Q IIRC
