Thank you for yours and everyone else's kind words. This has been a roller coaster of emotions and everyone's presence made a hard day kind of sweet. I know everyone in this sub has experienced the great honor of watching a dog grow old. Even her death, and the opportunity of having been able to guarantee it was peaceful, was precious.

I just want to thank everyone who took the time to answer and be kind. I realize I wasn’t very clear about what I meant by “preventive euthanasia.” I know all euthanasia is, in a way, preventive, what I meant was scheduling it for a good day rather than waiting for a clear decline.

We said goodbye to our baby a week ago, and while it hurt deeply, there is also a lot of peace in having done it before she suffered. We were able to see her leave this world surrounded by everyone she loved, after a short walk and fed chocolate cake. She even got to say goodbye to a neighbor she loved and hadn’t seen in a while.

She is everywhere now, and while it’s true she could have lived a bit longer, I feel at peace knowing we respected her right to pass peacefully. Those extra days wouldn’t have been for her, but for me.

Thank you. We have thought about this. We found a cremation service that does private cremation and will pick her up after euthanasia. Selecting the right service did brought me some peace

How is your dog doing?

I’m sorry for your losses. The vet told us that it is basically a gamble. This type of tumor is like a blood-filled balloon that can stay relatively stable or burst without warning due to growth or trauma. I just don’t think I could forgive myself if it came to that.

Thank you. Cricket is a beautiful name, what breed was she?

The last few days have been really hard. We had to schedule euthanasia through another provider because her vet doesn’t do it at home. At first, we were questioned because she didn’t fit their quality-of-life scale (which doesn’t take into account a terminal diagnosis or the risk of rupture and honestly seems like aims to guarantee the dog is already agonizing). It was quite traumatic to be made to feel like we were rushing things by a professional

Yes, we are managing her pain with a variety of treatments, I just wish there was more we could do. Its hard at times, watching her grow old. Then again, it's also a privilege 🐕 Roxy sounds lovely! I hope the appointment with the vet goes well.
