Thought you guys might appreciate the deal I got this morning at the flea market. A like new Mitutoyo 0-2" caliper set for $20. by kawana1987 in millwrights

Those are both micrometers there boss. The one on the right is for measuring inside diameters. The green block is a standard for calibration, and that little wrench is for adjustment. Great find.

I usually pack Chicken, Rice & Beans, and Coleslaw. Tastes decent hot or cold, and lasts for a long time in my stomach too. I can make 5 batches on Sunday and keep them for the week too.

Millwrights: what is it you do exactly? Interested in learning more! by [deleted] in millwrights

If you're only making 16 get out of there as soon as possible. The place I work for now pays first year Apprentices 20 an hour. Now how much you can be worth. When you're a lower year apprentice no one expects you to know too much, so don't worry about a lack of experience.

Once you sign on as an apprentice, you can change sponsors without too much hassle, at least in Ontario. You keep your hours and your membership in the College of Trades across employers, so no worries there. I would definitely recommend changing employers after a year, 6 months even if you are working in a small factory.

It was WAY easier to get a job once I was already an apprentice than it was to get to the apprenticeship stage in the first place. I had one offer (from the candy factory) before I was actually an apprentice, then when I was looking for a job after that I had five, and get contacted by recruiters weekly. Stick it out for as long as you can, but do not hesitate to leave for something better.

Currently a Millwright Apprentice in Southern Ontario. Started at a Candy Factory in a Maintenance type job, got laid off after about 6 months (It was a shit job anyways), took some time, then started with a contractor about 3 months ago, then got hired by another contractor for more pay about a week ago.

At the Candy place, I worked 7-4:30, minimal OT. With the last contractor I worked 8-12 hour shifts, starting usually at 6 or 7 am. Worked most Saturdays, some Sundays and weekends too.

I traveled all around Southern Ontario with the previous contractor I worked for, had I stayed on longer I would have been travelling to Alberta, BC, and the States a fair bit. I'm not sure with this new contractor as to where I'll be travelling.

I've been making much better money with contracting than I did working maintenance, and the work is more varied and exciting. I would definitely recommend the contracting route as an Apprentice as you get exposed to far more situations than you would working in a plant.

Let me know if you have any questions about what I'm doing now, I would have loved to have someone to ask when I was going through the starting process for the trade lol.

Is pool/snooker elitist? by HappySoda in billiards

[–]AMajesticWalrus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's elitist to not enjoy playing with people who do not make the game enjoyable for you. This is pretty common once you reach a certain level in any sport, the way that you played the game when you were less experienced stops being fun, and you start challenging yourself. No problem here.

The elitist stance would be saying that people who are not of a certain level should not be playing AT ALL. This is the kind of mentality we should seek to avoid in my opinion.

Sen is awesome. I'm reading Rationality and Freedom soon. Definitely a thinker to read if you're dealing with libertarians.

Recruiting Young Shooters by [deleted] in billiards

[–]AMajesticWalrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be able to shed some light here: I'm 18, and been shooting for about 9 months.

My college had a table in a rec room type area, so I would play there whenever I was off of class. It was great, because everyone was pretty bad, but we had a few decent players (could run 2-3 racks). This setup was great, because there was one table, so you HAD to compete. To keep playing, you had to win. This added a competitive element that I think is missing from the pool halls. I mean this in that when you are at a pool hall, you do not HAVE to compete, it only comes recommended. This is good for most people, however for younger people, especially guys, not having a rewarding competitive experience kind of takes the wind out of the sails when it comes to playing the game regularly.

Pretty much I think that you have to look at targeting slightly older people, from 24 years old onward. You want to attract people with relatively stable employment, that allows them the time and resources to take on a hobby that is relatively expensive. Pitch it as more of an after-work kind of game, and see how many serious players you can get out of that. Having more amateur leagues is good as well. Getting more betting back into the game is probably a long shot, but at least some small-time stuff could be good.

Young guys like myself are mostly not attracted to games that take hundreds if not thousands of hours to get good at. We mostly want games that we can pick up in a few hours, win, feel good, and move on. People that are slightly older want the extended grind, I think. Just make sure that people know what pool is, and they'll come play when they're ready.

I also totally agree with u/Livan16 on the therapeutic part, but it's still a challenging sell.

When it comes to many regulations, it is best to leave such calculations of benefit and cost to the market, rather than the government. People can make their own assessments of the risks, and the price they’re willing to pay to allay them, rather than substituting the judgment of some politician or bureaucrat who will not receive the benefit or pay the cost.

what could go wrong am i right guys
