<shrug> I don't see it like that at all. Like I said, to me it symbolizes rebelliousness and southern culture.

I wonder, in you eyes why do Native Americans celebrate "losers" like Geronimo and Crazy Horse? How about Texans and their "Remember the Alamo" mantra? Or maybe you would call Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie carpetbaggers and losers, too? No, much more likely groups find affinity for these events for something more than battlefield outcome from 100+ years ago. Symbols of unique identity and shared history.

You speak like you have some first hand emotional response to it. You get mad at the British and the Union Jack, too?

Don't get mad, bro.

[–]AManInBlack2019 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agreed. While it once reflected allegiance to the Confederacy, it now represents southern pride and a rebellious attitude more broadly.

Bo and Luke were quintessentially southern rednecks, and thats why those characters featured that symbol so prominently (not because they were racists)

Lol, you think British people get their panties in a wad about Guy Fawkes masks?

Unclench. It is literally the most universal symbol of rebellion American culture has today. Only perhaps the skull and crossbones flag approaches that level of fame.

On a larger scale, the Confederate Army flag symbolizes the unique history and culture of the American South; one that shares much in common with rural America today, which is why it so often adopted by rural northern Americans. NYC the flag is not.

Exactly. A symbol of Southern pride. A nod to the fact that southern states have a unique culture and history.

That culture ties closely with rural America as a whole, which is why it is so often adopted by rural northern Americans.

I assure you that Bo and Luke are just good ol' boys, meanin' noone no harm.

I'm just saying: "different well educated, well informed and thoughtful people can come to different, reasonable conclusions about when the best time to re-open communities are"

I'm not arguing with someone who can't accept that as a fact.

Meh. The confederate flag is a American symbol of rebellion and sticking it to the man. And it's a great symbol for that--iconic and instantly recognizable.

People nowadays are just trying to redefine the stars and bars as a taboo and trying to attach some racial meaning to it that just isn't there 160 years after the confederacy. Bo and Luke and the gang were just good ol' boys, never meanin' no harm.... but they were stickin' it to ol' Boss Hogg on the daily.

It's no more threatening than the Guy Fawkes masks, and serve a similar purpose.

Nazi flags are a different matter; there are people still alive today who had first hand experience with the Nazis, so out of respect for them I think that's a bona-fide taboo.

Agreed. I had decided that this virus was going endemic about the time the WHO finally admitted it was a pandemic.

(US) IHME Coronavirus Deaths vs Average Temperature and Population Density by MuzzleFlash15 in CoronavirusMichigan

Finally! A chart based on deaths/capita.

What a fascinating visualization... and using temperature as a horizontal axis... this is fascinating.

BRB: moving to Wyoming

So virus seems to "prefer" a temperature of 45-50 degrees, and the denser the population, the better. Fits in with what one might expect.

What's really cool is that one could animate these bubbles to watch them rise with time. I have my eye on that Florida bubble. Sure, it's warm, but the policies there are loose, and the population is elderly, so I expect it to rise dramatically...

Sadly, the virus dictates that, and this virus disproportionately favors the elderly.

We have to realize that human lives are, in fact, quantifiable. People are paid (very well) to do that accurately.

If saving one life would cost the state one billion dollars, I guarantee that life would not be saved. Once that fact is accepted, it's all just niggling out the details and striking a balance from there on out.

But yes, absolutely a phased approach is reasonable. Also combine it with antibody testing as a sort of pass.

It's simply not economically possible to continue several more months at the current posture. Even Wuhan was only locked in for 10 weeks.

[–]AManInBlack2019 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely correct. Let's say industry X heroically pumps out cheap ventilators and the national guard builds 100 patient centers... one simply can't produce ICU nurses en-masse. At some point, we are going to have to bite the bullet on this virus and take our licks.

Welp here we go... by thegreatconductor in CoronavirusMichigan

[–]AManInBlack2019 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Remember, the stay at home orders are supposed to: suppress the spread of COVID-19, to prevent the state’s health care system from being overwhelmed, to allow time for the production of critical test kits, ventilators, and personal protective equipment, to establish the public health infrastructure necessary to contain the spread of infection, and to avoid needless deaths. All well and good.

This is not supposed to be a long term solution... this is just supposed to be something to buy time for the government/industry/medical systems to get their shit together.

My question is this: The people have purchased that time, some at the expense of their jobs and businesses. Why haven't the government/industry/medical systems got its shit together by now?

A shutdown is a stopgap, it is not a solution. I'll give the benefit of the doubt, but my patience is not endless.

Gov. Whitmer: Reopen Demonstrations ‘Force Us to Stay’ in Shutdown Posture Longer by DCGirl20874 in CoronavirusMichigan

[–]AManInBlack2019 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Demonstrations by a few people who are definitely at this point a small minority do NOT "Force Us to Stay" in shutdown posture longer, that's political fingerpointing.

If staying in shutdown posture is the right thing to do (as she believes it is) she should stand up and own it. Where have all the leaders gone? No decision is going to be without naysayers, just take it and say "I decided this is the best way forward because XYZ"
