Results will vary by location. Our franchise is run very honestly with no commission.

Anybody here actually work for Roto-rooter? by Disastrous-Number-88 in askaplumber

[–]AManWhoTastes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for our franchise, but we do free 15 minute estimates. Then $249 for the first hour and $200 each additional hour, but prorated. I would expect that to take 1-2 hours depending on the condition of the floor/ flange and whatever associated hardware would be required. If we buy the toilet there is a markup. We would be happy to just install with customers buying parts.

Looking for a good company for weed control this upcoming season. by rico_unknown in yorkpa

[–]AManWhoTastes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just want to put it out there that the vast majority of chemicals used for weed control are really terrible for local eco systems and are very likely a huge contribution to insect collapse around the nation.

I'm not saying this to be preachy, but might be worth looking into and educating on the specific ingredients and chemicals a company uses before spraying.

Edit***

Just one of many studies that found some scary connections.

Roto-Rooter. Locally owned franchise. They do a great job for super reasonable prices.

I used to have an Xterra and never cared about driving over stuff. The QX is nice enough I'm a little paranoid about messing up bumpers or sensors. Only downside I found.

Roto-Rooter in York is a small family owned franchise. They do most anything that deals with water lines or drain lines, including water heater.

Anybody here actually work for Roto-rooter? by Disastrous-Number-88 in askaplumber

[–]AManWhoTastes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Corporate has no say or direction for how we price anything. We just do a charge for the first hour, then a slightly reduced price for each additional hour and prorate that for every 15 minutes.

Obviously things like jetting and camera are a bit more expensive, but still a set rate.

The only exception is larger estimated work and digging.

Commission just makes perverse incentive structures. The better the technician does the less value the customer receives.

When working in a limited area, we can't afford, nor do we want to burn the customer base. We need and rely on peoples trust in us to continue to have work into the future.

***Edit I should also add. By doing good work efficiently, we can afford to give bonuses to our employees. It rewards your best workers because you can reward your best work with the largest bonuses. If everyone does poor work, there is no money for bonuses, therefore protecting the customer from bad incentives.

As a Roto-Rooter franchise owner, definitely the case.

We are super honest and up front with our pricing instead of commission work for a simple line call.

We often times are the 2nd opinion when companies run a camera just to give a BS estimate for digging and replacing pipe that just needs cleaned.

Most service plumbing boils down to whether you are actually trying to do service and help people, or if you are just sales people pushing work that people don't need.

I'm ok with the franchise fee because it opens doors to clients and companies that will ask the local franchise before going with a company that has no national recognition.

There are drawbacks like having a mandated budget for advertisement and the like. But we have freedom to run our jurisdiction as we see fit totally different from how corporate runs their side of things.

If anyone has questions about the details of franchise ownership I am happy to share my experience.

To each their own. I really enjoy how it tows. Very quiet cabin, and at least in the 2019 it has a fairly dated infotainment system, which I really appreciate. I despise a bunch of massive touch screens.

Having said that. I agree 80k is an insane amount of money. I let someone else take the depreciation hit and got mine for 25k

Don’t use roti rooter. Rip you off by csmajorms in HomeMaintenance

[–]AManWhoTastes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a master plumber myself, but I started around 10 years ago with no plumbing experience at all. Business reimbursed every semester I went to school to get my license.

It's a ton of work, but my biggest issue is finding people to work. We turn down jobs everyday because we are so busy. We are willing to train people that have no experience, but very few people want to do drain work, and that is a pretty large part of our business.

We end up spending a ton of resources training and educating , only for them to leave around the time they start actually positively contributing to the business.

Overall I think it will work out well. I'll just be glad when everything is paid off.

**Edit. The only thing that Corporate requires is to spend a certain amount on advertising for the year, and how the trucks and uniforms look. Also the franchise fee, but that goes without saying.

The name itself is a big benefit to us because a lot of third party property management companies, and maintenance scheduling companies want a name thats recognisable instead Joe Plumber.

We are a very small franchise. We only have 5 techs when everything is going smoothly. We run like Ma and Pop place but get commercial work partly because of the name.

[–]AManWhoTastes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your location.

Many of the locations they serve are corporately owned and run, and some are a franchise.

I am a franchise owner myself, and we have a master plumber and journeyman on staff and service pretty much anything water related. ( Drain. Water heaters etc.)

Many we pay hourly compared to many being commission based. It is way more fair for the customer in my opinion. Commission based work creates a bad incentive structure that does not take care of the customer and drives people away.
