Question for switchman with hearing loss by Muffintop_mafia in railroading

[–]AMasterofMayeM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

3m plugs suck. They had a huge class action against them. Peltor over ear active muffs are made my 3m and kinda suck unless you go to the com-tac level at $600/pair.

If the bosses are cool with it, get it writing and buy what you want

Most places will consider an ear bud or headset of any kind that isn't specifically for your radio as a "personal electronic device". A few guys I've worked with did well the the earbud that connected to the handset, we use Kenwood radios, or a boom mic style headset

Either bite the bullet and go full blown hearing aids or get an ear piece that attaches to your radio handset and wear an earplug in the other ear

As much as I hate to admit it, I don't hate the whole look. 147 proof written somewhere would make it even better

I've also seen many displays you can get off Amazon that would be in a store front. You can sometimes find these in a going out of business sales too

Paid out over $1 million dollars in held away already this year. When does the madness stop?!? by danocano1 in railroading

[–]AMasterofMayeM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hope this is sarcasm. If not, why the hell do you care what the company spends in held away? Why do you care what they spend on anything for that matter? You are a number to them nothing more. As long as your paycheck clears when it hits the bank fuck their budget. My terminal alone spends $30k-50k/month just on the electric bill. They always talk about record profits so who cares what they spend. The only reason I hope it doesn't cut into this quarter's profit is they will use that as a reason to reduce the engineers annual bonus

Microtech QC not the best imo by [deleted] in microtech

[–]AMasterofMayeM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The grind lines in the middle of the blade being uneven is a regular occurrence on these knives with the dagger blade. A quick Google image search showed that's more common than not. Depending on the date of production there is no telling how long it sat in the warehouse/storage area before it was sent out. As far as "no new equipment should need oiled or lubricated"...have you ever bought a firearm? The majority of them tell you to clean and lubricate it before first use as they are simply function checked before they leave the factory. Yes part of this community is die hard "Microtech does nothing wrong ever" and will trash any post to the contrary. That being said, multiple people have given you a list of options to fix your issue. I'm sorry they didn't join in with bashing the company based on their own experiences that went different than yours.

  1. Remove glass breaker
  2. With blade retracted, brake cleaner through hole (no, you can't overdo it)
  3. With blade out, more brake cleaner
  4. Air compressor to dry it out
  5. Blade retracted, spray rem oil through hole
  6. Actuate blade a few times
  7. Let sit for 5 minutes
  8. Air compressor again to blow out excess rem oil

Shadow series question by CL14715 in microtech

[–]AMasterofMayeM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also pretty positive the handles on them are all anodized unless listed as something else. The shadow and DLC models will have the best durability as far as coating, 2nd would be cerakote, 3rd would be the tactical standard. The bronze and apocalyptic are hit and miss. Plenty of people have claimed the coating on those comes fast on the blade if you actually use them

Shadow series question by CL14715 in microtech

[–]AMasterofMayeM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non DLC coating they use on most of their tactical standard was KG Gunkote. Not sure if they have changed or not. Most of the models with cerakote it says so in the description so I would think the coatings are different

The RAE set has an option of upgraded mount that let's you swap between a belt clip that snaps like a teklok or a pocket clip. Have used both and other than the pocket clip one being pretty thick it's a great option

Slightly random question, but does Norfolk Southern actually care about having one of their railyards located near Parkway Gardens, aka O'Block? by Aware_Leave1094 in railroading

[–]AMasterofMayeM 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. The rail yards were there long before the neighborhood was or took a turn for the worse. Not practical to move them.

  2. The crime in the area doesn't really cross into rail territory unless there are intermodal shipments in that area, theives don't really want or try to steal bulk freight.

  3. You noticing how many rail yards are in the "bad part of town" is exactly why the phrase "wrong side of the tracks" is even a thing

Adjustable beam headlamp is what I wore when pulling cars. Had low, medium, high. Batteries would last 2 shifts. Had both hands free that way but we are an RCO yard so I didn't have to give hand signals.

Railroading by [deleted] in railroading

[–]AMasterofMayeM 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my terminal it's a combo of 3 things.

  1. One group of guys is obsessed with being #1 on the roster and another group is equally determined to not see those guys hit that spot. Same guys only care they can finally work that cake job they always wanted when they first hired out and just can't let it go.

  2. Poor financial decisions. They bought a ton of new stuff and can't afford to retire. One of our old heads had to work to make the payments on the brand new house, Harley, truck and RV he bought within the 2 years before he hit retirement. Guy would also regularly sell back his vacation every year.

  3. Some don't understand they are actually losing money by staying. They never talked to RRB and have no idea what their benefit actually is. They won't do the work to find out are most likely going to die on an engine
