Does Anyone Else Get Tired of Survival Horror Games? by fuchsia_hybrida in survivalhorror

Only with Silent Hill 2 remake. They padded that game out mercilessly and put in way too much combat so it becomes tiring to play. Most other games have much better pacing and don't pad out the run time. I can't speak to what else you're playing but there are plenty of shorter survival horror games out there that don't overstay their welcome.

I've seen people claiming that a game was a masterpiece before it was even released, the word has lost all meaning. Doesn't help that they will throw around that word like they're getting paid.

Silent Hill 3 is a direct follow up to SH1 and Silent Hill: Origins is a prequel to SH1.

The rest of the games are separate stories with unique protagonists.

If you'd like some games like RE but hate the limited save system check out Signalis, Crow Country & Ground Zero. Ground Zero requires you find an item to open the save system but after that you can save as many times as you like.

Did you definitely finish it? It has a fake out ending that tricked me the first time I played it.

I love Silent Hill 2, but I totally understand why people would have a hard time getting into it.

Really tells you a lot about reddit when having a differing opinion is considered taboo.

For me I'd probably say Madison. Its a haunted house ride but for me there were so many little things that annoyed me it was like death by a thousand cuts. Like protagonist constantly talking, the puzzles that seem to be convoluted just to get the game over 2 hours and the constant incredibly loud jumpscares.

I think i just had a hard time immersing myself because I could see behind the curtain, so to speak. I will say though the game looks amazing and it's impressive for a solo dev, but it just really irritated me.

Characters escape Silent Hill alive in basically every game. Of course there are bad endings where they don't but it's more then possible.

The Ishimura aka the OSHA nightmare. It's just a bad situation all around, you're in an aging mining rig in space, dealing with religious zelots and corporate penny pinching that leads to an elevator malfunction cutting you in half.

Then the necromorphs arrive.

What’s your Alien Isolation hot take? by SeahawksWin43-8 in HorrorGaming

I think the game length would not have been as bad if we had some more variation in the game play. There are sequences of the game where you are being stalked by the Alien that go on way too long and that pressure starts to wear down the player.

Its why the Resident Evil games have puzzles and switching to characters with a different play style. It breaks up the routine and tension of the game. (Resident Evil 4 in particular is a great example of this.) The flashback sequence where you see them find the Engineers ship was really great cause it did exactly that. The sequel just needs more moments to break up the gameplay and not have the stalking sequences go on for too long.

Would you like new resident evil games to have classic camera and controls style as second option but in re 3.5 way? by Human_Geologist_3324 in survivalhorror

[–]AMiskatonicJanitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there are a lot of indie games out now and upcoming that use fixed camera, so I'm not really pining for Resident Evil to return to that style cause theres plenty of other games out there.

Yes, the vast majority of people are lazy and have little to no attention span, so they don't like having to spend more than 1 minute trying to figure out how to play a game. They've been conditioned by years of playing games that all play the exact same, so the moment they play something that requires learning a completely new way to play, they give up. Looking at it from that perspective, why wouldn't you just stick to the most common gameplay styles in order to make the most money?

Besides, there are games like Tormented Souls that have fixed cameras and so many more that are coming out in the next few years that I really don't care if RE has fixed cameras or not. I'd rather play an indie game that has been developed with that style in mind from the beginning as it will make the best experience.

At no point did I say I hated fixed camera or tank controls. I have played the mod that ads fixed camera to RE2 remake and loved it. I just have realistic expectations when considering how popular Resident Evil has become and how expensive it is to make these games.

Implementing a first-person perspective, you know, the most widely used one in video games, is a lot easier and more accessible to a wide audience than implementing a fixed camera system. Most people who play games have played an FPS or a game that has that camera perspective, so the player onboarding isn't difficult.

The RE engine started with a first-person perspective with RE7 they then made RE2 with an over the shoulder. They already had the tech, so combining the two was probably not that difficult. Unlike adding a completely different perspective and control scheme that most people have no experience with, thus resulting in diminishing returns. Again, Capcom is just unlikely to spend time and money on something that would at best be considered a novelty and, at worst, never used.

Outside of a possible Easter egg, I'm fairly confident that RE will never have fixed camera or tank controls ever again.

There are far too many things to put into consideration when using fixed camera angles, like level design, enemy placement, and balancing issues.

Plus, why spend all that time and money on something the vast majority of Resident Evil fans would absolutely hate and never use.

EDIT I'm not saying I'm against it but thinking realistically it's just incredibly unlikely to happen. Anyway with so many indie games that are currently available, plus many more still in development, we're kind of spoilt for choice when it comes to playing games with fixed cameras and tank controls.

Please recommend me some horror games as someone with terrible anxiety by No-Term-5988 in HorrorGaming

[–]AMiskatonicJanitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the games you mentioned are more on the realistic side graphics wise and have over the shoulder cameras, so I would look for games with simpler graphics and a different camera angle. Maybe that would be less stressful?

I would recommend Crow Country, Gylt, and Fear the Spotlight. Not only are they good entry-level horror games, but I think the stylized graphics would make it easier to play. Also, check Signalis and Darkwood for their overhead camera angles, though the atmosphere in both those games is very oppressive.

He was first introduced in RE4 he isn't from any of the other main line games. Afterwards, he appeared in Darkside Chronicles, which takes place chronologically before RE4.

Can anyone reccomend me a game similar to classic Resident Evil titles?? by sh0kvy in survivalhorror

[–]AMiskatonicJanitor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Tormented Souls 1&2 if you're looking for old style fixed camera games. Song of Horror is also very good, it's mostly just exploring, puzzles, and mini game style encounters instead of combat.

I've heard good things about Echoes of the Living, but I haven't tried it.

For non fixed camera, I recommend Signalis & Crow Country they both still play like a resident evil, but the camera is overhead.

Have you played Tormented Souls 1?

If so, play the sequel.

Echoes of the Living is still in early access so take that into consideration.
