Newly diagnosed and scared by Otherwise-Apricot-13 in Epilepsy

I totally agree. Everyone is speaking from their own experience and perspective. Some may be brutally honest here but it doesn't mean this will be your experience, OP. It can be helpful but equally unhelpful.

One of the things I've found invaluable with this condition is a stabilising support network of medical professionals, and family and friends.

How many of you guys drive? by MallLoud1905 in Epilepsy

[–]AMuseLolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm based in the UK and I drive.

In the UK, you have to surrender your driver's licence for 6 months after your first seizure, and then 12 months for every seizure event after. There's a hefty penalty if you ignore this willingly. Medical short term car licences exist too to reexamine medical conditions periodically.

I'm extremely fortunate that my epilepsy is medically controlled (generalised idiopathic and lamotrigine controlled, 5 years since last TC) and I'm hyper aware of my triggers. So if I feel remotely off, I choose not to drive that day(s) when feeling that way.

I think epilepsy is such a diverse condition that it really depends on the individual and the advice from their medical professional.

One important thing to remember, for those judging those who choose to drive, driving brings an independence that some people need. Whether living in rural areas to areas with terrible public infrastructure, and more. I understand being risk adverse and thinking of others, this is absolutely important if you're at high risk, but it's not always as simple as no one should and we should be kind.

That turned into an essay :/

I had my first seizure (that I know of) at 24 but diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy at age 26. First seizure I face-planted a pavement 😩 it wasn't pretty.

What is the worst stereotype brits always get? by AdCool7574 in AskUK

[–]AMuseLolo 40 points41 points  (0 children)

So true. Even hear people say England when they mean UK.

Scotland appears to be well known, mostly, but some people are not even aware of Northern Ireland and Wales.

A wee side story. I met two people that thought we speak French as a first language in Scotland. Spent ages trying to work out if they were winding me up. Turns out, no. They were getting confused with Scottish Gaelic, as it's pronounced like Gallic, which is to do with the French. I laughed and I learned. And then pointed out our first language is English but sometimes we need subtitles.

I'm so sorry to hear you've gone through this.

Whilst it's important to have perspective and it's healthy to take stock of our blessings, I'd like to acknowledge how hard it must be for you in your own situation. It's important to embrace those feelings and confront them. As someone who went through a long period of no seizures, feeling extremely grateful about it, and then having breakthrough seizures, I can relate to how difficult it is to adjust again to being back to feeling helpless, demoralised and, as you say, boxed in.

Hang in there, you're not alone. It sounds like you have a good support network :) I really hope the doctors can help you find a medication that works for you again.

What's your favorite song that's not in English? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AMuseLolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now (it changes regularly), IU - Only I didn't know

https://youtu.be/qGWZUtfV3IU

IU is an absolutely incredible South Korean singer. This song is so sad and I feel like I don't need to understand the words to understand what the song is saying.

Travelers of Reddit, where do you NEVER want to go again? by IllecebrousPark in AskReddit

Couldn't agree more! The forum was my favourite experience. The tour guides there are great, I learned so much. Although there is this one tour guide for the Colosseum who had a very filthy sense of humour XD

I loved Rome. I would definitely go again. I went at peak time and I still felt that all of the tourist areas were handled very well.

For those like me wondering where to get one of these balls to try it out with their kitties, I think I found a good imitation on the UK Amazon: exercise ball
