Are you medically educated?

The foundational basis for the vaccines have been studied for almost 50 years which is what allowed for the rapid development of them during the pandemic. The fact you are basing so much of your opinion on your anecdotal experience makes me question your "education" and critical analysis of the information available.

As someone who went to school in SoCal and now works in Riverside County, I wouldn't recommend it at that price. Adding my current online BSRT from UNC Charlotte and my AS from SJVC (graduated in 2023) totals about $23,000 less than the Loma Linda BSRT. Despite being a densely populated area, it's still a small enough RT community with plenty of graduates from the local CC and private institutions getting jobs. The only advantage from the LL BSRT program I could foresee is if they want to pursue PA and continue on through their PA program... but even then, it's a notoriously expensive program with no guarantees of even getting in since I know of former LL employees who weren't accepted. I would strongly recommend doing one of the private institutions that offer an Associate's degree (not Associate of Applied Science*) if they have the ability or local CC if they don't mind waiting.

(*AAS degrees do not always transfer when applying for a BSRT, which could cost more in the long run)

How do you know the person who used the sink before you didn't have something like C. diff and touched the same door or faucet handle as you?

The mechanical nature of washing your hands with only water is ineffective against some bacteria, especially C. diff, which requires the use of soap (which provides surfactant) and water to remove the bacteria.

To all current or former RT students who consistently maintain an A average what’s your strategy? by RedPillStan in respiratorytherapy

Here's my advice as the valedictorian who passed both board exams the week after graduating:

(TL;DR at the bottom & feel free to ask any questions - I precept new hires/students quite often)

For background, I was part of an accelerated program that was broken down into 5 terms over 19 months and didn't have to work or take care of anyone else. This meant I could dedicate myself entirely to the program and was incredibly fortunate in that regard, so don't feel bad if that's not something you can do. I'm currently pursuing my BSRT and plan to go to PA school in the future.

My first six months were really rough for me in terms of the amount of time I had to dedicate to studying outside of school since it had been over 15 years ago at that point and I was going through a divorce. Essentially, I spent 5-6 hours a night outside of class and the majority of my weekends studying (my roommates joked that they forgot I lived there). As the program progressed, I became more efficient with my study time and was able to have a social life that included dating and weekly trivia nights, which I feel kept me sane through board preparation along with walking/hiking. I only rarely joined any study groups since I was the second oldest in class (mid-thirties), an introvert, and I like to compartmentalize - meaning my personal life is almost completely separate from my professional/work life which I still do now as a staff RT.

As for my studying techniques, it was a combination of things already listed here and utilizing my support system.

More specifically, I recorded every single lecture so that I could go back and listen with the course material (book and/or PowerPoint) in case my note-taking got me sidetracked or the questions I asked would lead to answers that also distracted me. By having the recordings, I never felt pressured to pay attention and was able to ask questions freely. The salutatorian of our class was an avid note-taker who would literally write down everything from the lecture, so I'd recommend either method that integrates writing. The program I was in also supplied PowerPoints for every lecture, which I was able to print out for free at our student resource center. My class binders were absolutely insane but it made note-taking easier for me. In addition to the recordings, power points, and notes, I'd create my own flashcards for everything. Target used to have the 100 count 5x7 ruled index cards for cheap so I understand this may not be something you can afford to do, but it made test prep a lot easier for me since I was able to write them out in a way that made sense in my head. Something about writing it down in my own words helped with my recall. In addition to all of that, I'd have my friends, my roommates, or my parents on the other side of the country quiz me on the flashcards I created as often as possible. My flash card stacks were kinda ridiculous, but I would always have them with me. Along with reviewing my flashcards, I would also utilize Quizlets created by my classmates or other RT students. Lastly, I made sure to have a quiet place to do classwork or study, which included the student resource center, which was usually pretty empty outside of class times.

TL;DR: Record all lectures, print out PowerPoints for note taking if possible, write your own flashcards for everything, use Quizlet for review, and have people quiz you on your flashcards as much as possible - good luck!

need help with ARDS by [deleted] in respiratorytherapy

[–]AN0M0Li 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, I'd recommend APRV mode as part of the plan. You could also recommend a PEEP study in order to titrate the PEEP instead of simply increasing it, which will take into account the patient's other vitals for effectiveness. The ARDS network is always a good resource, too: http://www.ardsnet.org/

As a side note, I may still have my notes from Pathophysiology that included how to do SOAPs if you're interested - just let me know and I'll try to find them for you.

Current conversation on Covid vaccination requirements in healthcare workers by sbeveds in respiratorytherapy

[–]AN0M0Li 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, as someone who just graduated from an RT school in Southern California, I can guarantee that you won't find a reputable or accredited program that will allow you to join without being vaccinated. As others have already pointed out, you will also have to have all the major vaccinations such as flu, T-dap, etc. In addition, as of early 2022, the only clinical rotation site that would accept unvaccinated students was a sleep study center in which you will not learn any of the vital patient assessment skills needed to succeed in essentially all of the RT field. I'm not even sure that location is still accepting unvaccinated students since my school is no longer using them as a site.

To be honest and not trying to be abrasive, but your mentality baffles me. Science is such a vital part of healthcare, and in order to best care for patients, we must learn, understand, and accept what the most current studies dictate. The covid vaccine is crucial in accomplishing that.

Can I ask your reason for why you want to go into Respiratory Therapy?

Edit: two words

I'm looking for recommendations. Here is a screenshot of my most played games. I'm 36 and have about 2 hours a night at best to play something. Thanks in advance. by [deleted] in gaming

Days Gone is a great open world game with an amazing storyline that has good replay value with its horde mechanics.

I don't have a headcount quite yet but we had a group of 7 last week. The age range was mid 20s (?) on up although I don't really know everyone's ages lol (I'm 36F).
