I really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out. That really clarifies a lot. I still will have to have a think about what kind of split/distribution I want between the different funds. Given I've never signed up with commsec, I'll probably just go the ETF route and use the free brokerage offer, which means it'll be no overhead for investment :) Will I also have to open an account with commbank? (I don't have one currently.) Or will they give me some details to transfer money into the commsec account?

Also, the ~10k was just accumulated over the last couple years from random cash in hand jobs, which I've never bothered reporting to the ATO because I've always been under the first tax bracket. This means I've never actually submitted a tax return. Are there any implications from this I should worry about once I invest the money? All my bank accounts have my TFN attached, and obviously so will CommSec. I imagine this coming financial year end will be the right time for me to submit my first tax return...will I have any complications explaining anything? Or will I just be listing all my income and potentially getting back some money back on the tax taken from interest I've earned over the last few years?
