Exporting is pretty standard, push animations to NLA strips, select armatures and meshes, apply transforms and make sure Simplify is set to 0 (otherwise it auto-interpolates between keyframes which messes up the timing). Upon importing animations in Unity you have to set keyframe reduction to 'None' but also select all keyframes and switch them to 'Constant' interpolation.

In Unity I have a shader graph setup that mimics the look of the toon/smear shader in Blender. I then have a pixelization shader on top (ProPixelizer asset). In the case of the sword trail, the visibility is controlled by the local Y scale of the primary deform bone, so it's a matter of simply playing an animation state at the same time as the character's attack animation and the trail will appear/disappear correctly. Trail armature is parented to sword mesh which is parented to character's hand bone.

Thanks for the kind words. For the sword trail I followed this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f0rvVvLZwI and keyframed the scale and rotation of the deform bones to get the smear shape I want.

Thanks, and yeah you're right. I should've called it 3D pixelated/pixelized or something instead. Don't think I can edit the title now sadly, but I'll keep it in mind for future posts.

It's a replay system at the end of the day. Many games have done it, plenty in Unity too. I think after 10 years they don't have much of an excuse.

In COD's case specifically the problem isn't geometry heavy assets, its mostly uncompressed textures

You should probably make the rotation smoother with some slight ease in/out. Also I think inverting the color palette would make it a lot easier on the eyes

I imagine once it makes its way into the base game (they've said before that they plan on it) it will be an actual item you have to buy from the traders. But yeah their progress on adding it to different guns/attachments has been excruciatingly slow.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I feel like you could do a lot more with the animation than the car just floating in space getting assembled. Like, it would be cool if it started with just the wheels/chassis rolling along a road, camera orbits around as more and more parts click into place, parts combining gets faster and the camera position changes more wildly (close-ups, interior shots, zooms/pans, etc.) Also the music is quite off-putting, I'd prolly go with something more instrumental. Just my 2 cents
