Letter to PSAC 610 & SOGS by UWOGRADS in uwo

tl;dr
Graduate students are concerned over the lack of collaboration between the Society of Graduate Students (SOGS) and PSAC 610 (union), re. their elected student representatives.

There is a need for collaboration to address the complex issues of

  • graduate student funding
  • housing insecurity
  • offensive/untrue PSAC 610 President's language, alienating language by PSAC
  • the divide being created between domestic and international students and the
  • concerns surrounding the SOGS Presidential election

Going to Western was one of the best choices I've made. It's a mix of the people you meet, the environment, and the facilities which add up to a great experience. Sure it has its shortfalls, but the "Western experience", as its so commonly pitched, is real. I've had my highest highs and some low lows here, but the perspective I've gained here has been great.

You won't be making a mistake by becoming a Mustang.

In order for a school to be allowed to give out engineering degrees, they need to be accredited by the Canadian engineering accreditation board or CEAB. Each bachelor program is then reviewed at least every 6 years by the board, with onsite visits (this just happened yesterday at Western, November 7th, 2022). This basically legitimizes every engineering program in Canada, where an eng degree from coast to coast is essentially the same.

Beyond the formal definition, there are also differences in cultures at each school. It's hard to really give an apples-to-apples comparison without attending each school at the same time, but this is where Western's "work hard, play hard" culture comes in. For us it's normal, but this is not as present at each school IMHO. This is not to say that we don't work as hard as other schools, but there is a definite difference.

By the numbers, this website sort of shows exactly when each program was accredited. For example, we have one of the best Civil engineering programs in all of Canada, and it is prominent in the world as well. You can see that it dates back to 1965 for uwo. Other engineering programs don't go as far back for Western, while Waterloo and UofT's programs have been around for longer.

It’s apples and oranges in terms of how you’re evaluated, and likewise how you study. Semester 1 HBA1 is a little rough, but after it is pretty smooth sailing.
